 Godzilla (2014)
THE ICONIC MOVIE MONSTER GODZILLA STOMPS INTO THEATERS ON MAY 16, 2014BURBANK, CA, September 13, 2012 – Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have slated their take on the classic Godzilla franchise to kick off the Summer moviegoing season on May 16, 2014. The joint announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, and by Legendary Pictures. Toho Co., Ltd.’s Godzilla franchise contains one of the most widely recognized movie monsters worldwide, including more than 25 films, multiple television programs, video games and book series. Legendary, which has been developing the project, and its partner Warner Bros. will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall agreement with Warner Bros. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards, who earned worldwide acclaim for his feature directorial debut, “Monsters.” Edwards directs from a screenplay by David Callaham (“The Expendables” films), David S. Goyer (the “Dark Knight” trilogy) and Max Borenstein (upcoming “The Seventh Son”). Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce, along with Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher will serve as executive producers alongside Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. The tent pole film is expected to be presented in 3D.

so excited until I read that last line. 3d has a tendency to ruin everything but I can't pass up an opportunity to see Godzilla in a theater...

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
^ Haha, love it! Yeah, I'm pretty darn excited about this film. It's probably considered blasphemous to base a Godzilla film after a comic book, but I've gotta say, Stokoe's new "Half Century War", if done right as live action, would be a WONDERFUL show. Love the viewpoint of a soldier who's been engaged in battle against Goji during every one of his attacks on Tokyo, but it also would feature Godzilla's various looks over the years. Thay'd have to pull it off just right though. Anyone who loves a good comic book, or even a good story or artwork & hasn't picked up this title yet, should DEFINITELY do so. I'm reeaally looking forward to where it's going to go after establishing the plot in the 1st issue... But yeah, ha, can't wait for 2014!

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
One thing is for sure, even in crappy 3D, it could not possibly be worse than the '98 Zilla film with manboy Mathew Broderick.
That said i can't wait to get my my first '14 Ameri-Goji sofubi! I hope Marmit gets on board like they did with the '98.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
I'm pretty excited for it. Gareth Edwards' previous movie (Monsters) was a great low-budget sci-fi film, and io9's article has me even more stoked: Quote: But the centerpiece of the footage was a sequence where a big monster is attacking an airport, shredding airplanes and trashing buildings. It looks sort of like the Cloverfield monster with a more of a beetle-like carapace and spindly insect legs. It looks massive and powerful.
Yesterday, director Gareth Edwards told us there would be other creatures in the film — and here's our first sight of one. It looks scary and huge.
And then Godzilla's foot comes down next to the creature. Godzilla's FOOT. Which is dwarfing this poor spindly little creature. http://io9.com/we-saw-a-glimpse-of-godz ... -851082801

Haha, has everybody seen this by now? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGOX_FdEccc. I hadn't so maybe it'll be new to some of you other Godzilla fans too. NOTE: This is NOT the new sdcc 2013 trailer.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
I am not terribly excited for this, nor am I expecting much of anything. I mean, I definitely want it to be at least tolerable, but hollywood is not really delivering any of my expectations on their genre features. There was a great post on io9 not too long ago about not re-making, re-imagining, prequel-ing, etc. films when you have nothing to add to the story. And I will fully admit to being a Showa-era fan, but that doesn't necessarily mean I will automatically dismiss Heisei stuff. And yes, I am a fanboi and also critical of movies, but for those who haven't see it, check out this preview model (it could be just conceptual, but does match the teaser art so far) So here is just some of my initial beef, evaluating it purely from a practical design perspective: What is going on with those body proportions? The tiny face makes it look like it is a Godzilla wearing a giant Goji costume. And look at those 'T-rex' arms - how is he going to wreak any havoc against the masses with those? (and since he can't bite anything) Definitely spent too much time doing leg presses. Feeling pretty blech about this. I'm just thinking logistically how hard it would be for a Goji like this to terrorise a city, except by stomping and head butting - which is fine I guess, I just like the whole lizard clawing/biting thing to be prevalent too. Guess I really just want to see him pick up a train and chew on it. In short, the design looks nice aesthetically, but I would make some small alternations if it were up to me. It's got promise, and can't really fall shorter than the '98 version. /rant

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
Great "rant"! Your observations seem spot on to me, and I too hope that's Not his final look. I mean, Really?! I'm a fan, but honestly, How difficult is it to get the Godzilla formula?! And that sculpt looks almost like they meshed Toho's Godzilla w' the last Hollywood Godzilla (Zilla). How would they not understand the many ways that movie failed in by now? chimmychazz wrote: click for larger picThe tail in this poster appears very skeletal-like, and since I doubt it's a poster of a dead Godzilla, I think we can at least determine that his long fleshy tail is gone. Some optimism though, there's a Great video interview w' Gareth @ Comic-Con, and apparently in working on the Godzilla design, he claims that it was performed very extensively with Toho. That actually gives me hope (fingers crossed). A couple of other neat spoils from the IGN video are that this will be an origin story on Godzilla, and he will be the tallest one yet, coming in at over 100 meters tall! You can watch the interview here : http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/07/20/comic-con-godzilla-stomps-back-into-san-diego. Re: Godzilla (2014)
A buddy of mine showed me a few Tweets over Comic Con weekend that suggested Godzilla could be fighting up to three monsters in this film, including Ghidorah. I don't know the account that posted them, so it's very possible it could just be hopes and dreams.

There's another one up currently. If you search "King Godzilla I'm back bitches" you'll see a two minute video of it. Shows his apparent final design, too. I'm diggin' it.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
I'm enjoying the proportion of its head, if the movie does bomb then we can make fun of how derpy/retarded it looks.
Still, I hope that's not how the final version turns out.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
Rumor has it the design is still being tweaked, and the version seen at the SDCC "experience" is not final. Sorry, can't remember where I read this, but it came from the production team.
My guess on the manque proportions ... they wanted to retain classic Goji design while making him more physically "possible" at that scale and incorporating "real reptile" elements.
No matter how it turns out, it's not going to please everyone. The same little kid in me that was totally psyched for Pacific Rim is psyched for this movie, too. Maybe I just don't have grand expectations for these things ... there's simply no way in today's context that a remake could carry the same cache that the original film did in its postwar JP setting, even if there will be oblique references to Fukushima.

I really like how Godzilla looks but seriously, those t-rex arms would not cut it against the likes of King Kong.
