Toho announced a new Godzilla movie for 2016. Guess the success of the latest American-made movie prodded the decision. Hope they abandon the G-force crap that ruined all the later Japanese Godzilla flicks but keep the rubber suit.

Well, at least they know now that they do not have to deliver anything good to make it a success.

Re: Japanese Godzilla rises again
Time will tell what Toho will deliver but it would be really great to see a throwback to the Showa era films.
My favorites have always been the ones directed by Jun Fukuda even tho they are campy their charm makes up for it.
I have never watched anything much past Godzilla vs. Biollante other than a few scenes here and there, they just did not have the feel of the ones that I grew fond of watching as a kid in the 1970's.
I think Return of Godzilla aka Godzilla 1985 is an underated film and worth a bit more than its given credit.
That time period lacks giant monster films in general with few exceptions since everything trended towards slasher films.
I was reluctant to go see the Warner Bros. film but from the opening credit to the very end was entertained.
That was unexpected and made me optimistic about future films but the 1998 film is just horrible in every possible way.

Interesting, I would have thought that licensing would prevent them from doing anything with him until at least the US trilogy is done.

So, I guess I will keep the following comments limited to a spoiler tag, just in case people want to save themselves for the 'reveal.'
Some cursory images popped up overnight giving us our first peak at the new Toho Goji. These are quite.... interesting. I am not quite sure just yet what to make of them, or what this is going to say about the upcoming Shin Godzilla. Given that the film is being put together by the creative team of Hideki Anno and Shinji Higuchi though, it is perhaps a bit unsurprising that big ol' G has such a gruesome, realistic look. But I am intrigued by what this might mean for the story. Is it giving a link to his radiation origins? battle damage from fighting another monster? a design meant to put us all in a 'horror' mindset of what an actual attack by a giant kaiju might give? Certainly less lizard-like than past incarnations. And I am very happy they have done away with the whole 'doghead' profile so prevalent in recent versions. One thing is for certain, that stare is definitely unnerving. Channelling a lot of skeksi for me. Anyhow, I think it is interesting to see, as much as I like going in to movies with a clean slate. Let's just hope it gets executed better than AoT.
I also have no idea if these were taken from an 'official' release from Toho (seems doubtful) so there is that. Anything at this point is speculation. I do think it is an interesting new take on Godzilla. I am very cautiously optimistic this is going to be scary, terrorising Godzilla, that also makes for a fun, enjoyable film.

Oooohh, thanks for posting, Steve. Verrry interesting.
I'm with team battle damage theory. It looks to be a skinless version, showing those hunky Goji muscles. And in the close-up, he appears charred.
I'm anxious to see more now.
Getting excited!

Re: Japanese Godzilla rises again
August Ragone has an explanation of Godzilla's look in Resurgence that hadn't come to mind, but seems like a bit of an obvious possible connection once you hear it...
You touched on it, Steve...
"... Anno's conceit recalls the initial concept for Godzilla by Ishiro Honda, as a literal victim of the H-Bomb — his scales resembling keloid scars — and may not be his only form or mutation." - August Ragone
I sure hope that this isn't the main look for him in the film. As a final form, Great, but not representing his normal appearance.

Okay, not sure we need to keep up spoilers or not for the discussion, but one more.
Yeah, that is kind of what I was initially taking it as. I think they are going for a very 'mutated' look, and the direct connection to Goji being a by-product of the atomic age (and hence an homage to the original film and vision). Plus, I still can't help but see the Titan connection there, especially in the exposed muscle and savagely grotesque body.
I was actually thinking about this quite a bit, and I think it would be pretty cool - my preference in fact - if they actually did this as a period film, i.e. if they are going to 'reboot' the franchise, make it just like the original. A post-war mutant Godzilla would be so much cooler (to me) than one rampaging about a modern day Tokyo. But, I admit, I probably have this same bias applied in all movies.
A new trailer is now available for the Shin Godzilla 『シン・ゴジラ』 movie. Japanese, of course, but there is no dialogue or voiceover in the trailer, so fine for viewing by all.
Interesting to see him full-body in this 'gruesome' take on Goji. While you can definitely see the heavy connection to modern and Heisei Goji versions, I am really digging the influence I see in his proportions/stance to the original Showa era versions. I still have some reservations, but this is just an early sneak peak I think. I take it to be a new 'origin' story on the king of monsters. Some of the shots look a bit crude, and other parts look like they have that realistic/TV soap opera feel to them (I think it is the lens filters and filming techniques), and I am not sold on a lot of the CGI it shows. Still, I am hopeful to see what Anno and Higuchi come up with. If nothing else, we will be getting a new Godzilla movie, and a Japanese one at that, which is always a treat.

Thanks, Steve! I'd been anxious to see better images of him.
There are some really nice dynamic angles of shots featured in this trailer too, though no telling what will actually make it in to the film. That happens.
Still not sure how I like the look of godzilla, but I'm excited to see it either way. Maybe in context with the story, he'll grow on me.

Re: Japanese Godzilla rises again
Definitely interesting to see all the gruesome detail up close. It might not be 100% the version for me, but I can appreciate its originality. And man, that is one honkin' tail!
