Alexei Sayle wrote a while ago "Somebody told me that only 12,000 people saw The Wire when it was first broadcast in the UK but every single one of them wrote an article for the Guardian about it" Still, at least they have turned it into this.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/wire

Re: The Wire
Read "Clockers" if you ain't.
I think Sons of Anarchy is the NEW "the wire"...Peggy Bundy carries the show. Her talent was wasted on Married with Children..

Loved the Wire, I'll have to check out Sons Of Anarchy. The Wire had some really true-to-life bits...

Re: The Wire
Enjoyed the Wire. ALOT! One of my favorite shows and was sorry to see it go. Just met Andre Royo (Bubbles) a couple weeks ago at the Grove in LA. Expressed my admiration for the show and his character. Really, really nice guy btw. Wanted to tell him how jealous I was that he not only got to hang out with Steve Earle, but act with him. Not a stretch for ol' Earle though... Told me he was going to be in the new Spielberg adaption of the Tuskegee Airmen out this December I believe

Re: The Wire
Almost finished season 4. I love this series and can't believe I waited so long to watch it. They did a really good job with the language, character developments and overall story arcs.

Re: The Wire
I finished season 2 on DVD. Really well done. Complex characters, great story arcs. Kind of slow moving at times (but in a good way). Almost like a novel unfolding. Makes CSI and Law and Order stuff look silly in comparison. I'm trying to pace myself and not watch the remaining seasons too quickly. Generation Kill is supposed to be great too. David Simon, creator of the Wire, is working on a new series called Treme which takes its title from an area in New Orleans. Supposedly going to focus on musicians and the aftermath of Katrina. Simon is also fascinating in interviews with his views on cities, classes, the drug war, institutions, journalism etc http://video.pbs.org/video/1134533920/s ... /957390690

Re: The Wire
Wait till Season 4. And I agree on all counts.. I like that there are a lot of things unsaid and mostly implied. I like how they showcase the cast rather then stick to certain people. There are so many elements that are great.
I wouldn't say it's the best show ever but then again it's hard for me to compare tv shows or books etc. There are ones I like and ones I love and some I just can't stand.
But I do like how they went out after season 5 and didn't go back. It makes you want more and it makes you want to revisit things you missed. Some shows peak and end up being dragged out and end up being forgettable. (Sienfeld comes to mind.) I'm glad this didn't.

Re: The Wire
Organic: good to see the Wire is finally out and about on DVD in the UK! I don't have HBO, so I didn't even know about the program until the last season was about to air. My brother had all the prior four seasons on DVD, and to say I was addicted for nearly a month and a half is an understatement. I would watch two or three episodes a night. IMO, I am glad I got to do it that way, only because the series--while extraordinary--does have episodes here and there that drone on. When I think about them individually, I found myself saying, "Wow, this would have sucked if I just saw this ONE episode." I think this is also why critics liked the label, "Dickensian" for the series, because you CAN'T watch JUST one episode...even one season. It is like reading a Dickens novel...so many characters, so many lives. In the end, they all matter. Or do they?
After all was done, my ranking of the seasons starting with my favorite: 1, 4, 5, 3, 2 My brother, who liked the show as much as I, differed just a bit: 1, 5, 4, 3, 2

Generation Kill is pretty good, but I wouldn't put it in the same league as The Wire.

what do you think? I think Twin Peaks is the greatest T.V series of all time. The wire is good though equally as good as The Shield for me. Also for the people who really love the wire, youll have to watch Homocide Life on the streets, pratically the same thing but for the 90's.

Re: The Wire
i am among those who think The Wire is the greatest tv show of all time. amazing writing from the first season straight through to McNulty's 'funeral'
the shield is great as well, but i dont think it can stand with the wire. maybe if it wasn't on FX at could've gone even further than it did.
And Sons Of Anarchy is a pretty decent replacement for The Shield, but it has a long way to go before people can claim its a better show.

Re: The Wire
Necroposting: The revival of dead threads. I just finished watching Season 2 and the first episode of Season 3. A little late to this party. I'd tried watching the series pilot a couple of times and thought that it was too much to get into while catching up on other series. Glad I stuck with it. I finally "get it" as to why many call this the greatest television series, ever. I'll probably end up agreeing with that but have come to think of these sorts of progressive dramas as being their own genre. They're not mini-series, they're not movies, they're not episodically-based. They've got their own thing going on. This is very old news for those of you who've seen the whole thing, but I was disappointed to see D'Angelo go. I thought he was one of the most unusual and sympathetic of the street characters. Although he was a jerk, I also kinda felt for Ziggy when he finally messed up, big time. I figured he'd "get it" at some point, but wrongly assumed it'd be the result of his big mouth and ostentatiousness with money, not what was basically a temper tantrum. I loved how the first season wrapped up with numerous resolutions instead of a cliffhanger. Not all story lines were resolved, but that was done in a realistic way rather than in a manner that made me feel baited to see what happens next. Very intelligent and a welcome from the usual "who shot JR?" cliffhanger cliches. However I didn't realize that each season tells a different story involving different aspects of Baltimore civic life. It took a little attitude adjustment to get used to that in the second season, but by the end of it, I was convinced that this show enjoys some of the most brilliant writing of anything ever broadcast. By contrast, LOST and Fringe are like cartoons (if intentionally.) Unless someone else out there is catching up like me, I guess this thread can go back to the Whatever Graveyard. Just wanted to offer some props for a truly great drama, if belatedly.

Re: The Wire
Real Deal Holyfield "The Wire" star Felicia Pearson has been arrested after drug cops swooped on her home in a pre-dawn raid on Thursday. The actress, who played narcotics dealer Snoop in the hit TV series, was held on a state warrant by officials in Baltimore, Maryland along with more than 30 other suspects. The series of co-coordinated raids was aimed at busting an enormous heroin and marijuana ring, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Fans of the Wire: I just ordered Homicide (involving some of the same people behind the Wire). Complete DVD series (all 7 seasons) for $75 on Amazon. Haven't seen any episodes yet but hear it's very good and figured it was worth getting.

The fact that the crew recruited "real people" from Baltimore is part of what drew me in. Gotta admit I'm sort of stuck in the fourth season, but I see what the big deal about Snoop is. I should hurry up an finish The Wire before Breaking Bad and Mad Men start up again... So much media, so little time.

Re: The Wire
Stuck in season four? I think I watched it in about two days, easily the best-paced of the five.
Just did a season five re-watch this past week. It was the only one I watched live on tv (boy, was that brutal). I always wished it was just a little longer.
As a TV fanatic, this is easily one of my favorite things of all time. Really effective - own the lot and could watch it on repeat.
For where to go next, the closest heir is breaking bad, which I can best describe as prezbylewski turning into marlo. Sons doesn't hold a candle - way too overblown. Mad men is pretty great. The other quality dramas from that time were the sopranos, deadwood and six feet under.

Re: The Wire
Season 4 is timely with the focus on schools. Meanwhile the country is focused on public education and teachers and school performance...
Treme Season 1 arrives on DVD in April.
Created by David Simon (The Wire) and Eric Overmyer (Homicide), this musician-centered HBO original series also stars Steve Zahn, John Goodman and Melissa Leo.
Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, this multifaceted drama follows the frustrating trials and tribulations of the devastated city's determined residents, such as trombonist Antoine (Wendell Pierce), Mardi Gras Indian Chief Albert (Clarke Peters) and restaurant owner Janette (Kim Dickens).
