James Lavelle is a Jap toy aficionado. He has hook up with Nigo and Medicom to churn the most desired toy.
Just what the to know what our fellow members think of U.N.K.L.E.
I always like the first album with DJ Shadow.

I have most if not all his releases when James Lavelle was with that other guy to from MW001 Japan release to UK stuff for UNKLE. I can;t remember that other guys name... (Timworthy??)

I have all the first releases in cardboard format of MoWax, CD and vinyl. Also the UNKLE ltd ed gatefold album and the Japanese version with different cover.

I don't like him when he turned stardom wannabe and djed breakbeat stuff... just fashionable shit that didn't last very long. I heard him live twice at parties and he can't mix too good...

Back in the day, I remember he use to always advertise in the Relax mag a full pager, to tell the world what rare items he got that month...kind of into himself too much.

I have totally lost track with what he is up to now. All I know is that the UNKLE shop in the UK has closed down...

I do know he started Mowax label and his beats are all looped from movies and His lists are also taken from Movies.
I started with Dj Shadow and back tracked to UNKLE. I guess james were too cocky, therefore Shadow followed Soulsides, then Quannum.

I think Shadow started with Solesides first, with those other rappers Lyrics Born etc... I was buying his experimental triphop stuff from Solesides way before the Lavelle album...

Remember the song he did together with Krush on Mowax? I saw them both Krush and Shadow play side by side once in 1995.-96.. total madness.

Yeah MoWax days were the best, a highlight in my musical journey. It was revolutionary in dance music, street smart, design kinkiness and also cool as fuck.

I like those Lavelle figures he did with Nigo, Futura etc. but didn't get any. I thought the music the label released was good enough for me :) Back then a $150 figure was out of my budget.

Dj Krush was awesome too. I get what you mean, those time the figures was excellent only problem was the price tags. i was busy tracking Shadow rare releases.
I have the all edition of endtroducing, Brainfreeze, product placement and Diminishing returns party pak. I didn't get his collab wit Obey thou, just wasn't feeling it.

Yeah I think the Obey thing was like some marketing ploy... you kinda felt it wasn't really for the love.

I also have what you got, but not the all edition of endtroducing. Have you heard the new Cut Chemist album, it rocks! I am sad but also understand why he left Jurassic 5. That "listen to the music" song on the new ipod ad is from him! Can't believe he has finally reached stardom... I remember hearing "Jayou" in 99, and started collecting anything he touches.

Have you got Shadow's new album. Been hearing it like 15 times already and still not really getting into it.

Oh, I have that rare bootleg of Lesson 4 from Shadow as well. :D

The Outsider was totally awesome. Diminishing returns made sense to me now. The current tune are so back to his roots. Been alternating The outsiderr with Avenged Sevenfolds. The two are on my playlist day in day out.

Yup Cut chemist has made his mark, His recording on a major label. I really enjoyed the litmus test.

Soulside = Quannum

Solesides became Quannum in 1997

Those first UNKLE figs have dropped WAY down in price - the Blue and the Green Pointman on blister cards, that is.
I don't know what the colored Medicom 12" RAHs go for...there's always a lot of the Black ones on eBay but most don't sell. When the Black RAHs sell, they're around $120, but I imagine the Pink is a bit more. I really want the Pink, Green and Blue...

Back to the music...
First UNKLE album was pretty darn good! Most of Shadow's stuff is pretty darn good! I like "The Outsider" as he seems to be going back to his roots (with the hyphy shit) and moving forward at the same time (with the non-hyphy shit). However, that also seems to be the only problem with the album - it's not cohesive. I dig most everything on it, but it's a weird assortment of songs.
Was super into all that stuff coming out in the mid-90s. The ShortKut/Cut Chemist was (is) a great recording! The MoWax Shadow 45s. Solesides was THE shit back then! But Quannum as just kinda turned TO shit...
I've got a couple copies of Dan the Automator's "Music to be Murdered By" 12"! That's a pretty funny album cover from '89 I believe!

It almost seems like this is the reason I dig on this album so much. DJ Shadow really makes it work and Lavelle throws in his quirky stuff as filler. Major launching pad for Shadow becuase he was given sort of Cart Blanche to work with some of those names. UNKLE isn't really anything without Shadow. Why the breakup? Anyone know? The best video is the one where that hot chic falls asleep on the train.

Was that 'Be there' Or Rabbit, mmm... Can't remember.
Anyway, 'Rabbit in your headlight' is my favourite, next to 'Lonely Soul'. Radiohead and The Verve are my 2 top British Band, My best indie is Ride.
Ride the God of Shoegazers.

Wait, are you talking about the UNKLE album, or DJ Shadow's "The Outsider"? My quote you referenced was in regards to "The Outsider", not "Psyence Fiction".
The UNKLE album is great - a classic.
And yeah, "Rabbit..." and "Lonely Soul" are fantastic - I love the use of strings in "Lonely Soul".
