You might wanna try some of the hotels down in Ocean Beach. Its a short
cab ride to the convention center.

Lodging is definitely more nuts than ever this year. If you're flying in, I'd suggest booking airfare with your hotel. I was looking at four nights at the Horton Plaza for $2100 and a $200 flight separately. I managed to get close to 600 bucks off when I booked my flight and hotel together through Expedia.
I'm told it's fairly easy to get a room in the "hotel circle" area but it's a bit far and you'll have to take a trolley or cab to the convention center.

Try the Ramada at Gas Lamp, they had rooms until a couple months before the con last year.

we stayed in hotel circle last year, and it wasn't that difficult to get around. the san diego public transit system was ridiculously easy to maneuver.
if you are at all familiar w/ subway maps anywhere, you can do it. I wouldn't recommend a cab though, it can get very pricey taking it to & from. Maybe save it for the day you are doing all of your shopping.
