Is everyone buying up all harder to find toys for trade bait.

I mean there is a lot of collectors buying lines they don't collect just to have some trade bait.

Wish I could afford to! I always think about it, to be honest, when something pops up I don't want (say mini damn) but I just can't. I kinda feel like I'd rather just who ever is trying for it to get it, and not have me interfer. I mean, sure, a flipper can get one too, but still with flippers out there, it's hard enough without me sneaking in just for some trade bait.

But to answer the actual question you asked, I can't say I've really noticed.

I love all the figures I have up for trade.
I got a new case and will add them to it. BUT.....If I can trade them for RARE Secret Base I would do that also.

The funny thing is most people are not having any luck trading away their bait. Most of the trade proposals are kinda stupid or just insulting.

Being relatively new here I've worried about my trade proposals looking stupid to those who have more experience or being inappropriately imbalanced regarding value. However, I've recently made some trades where the other party was not only happy with what I saw as an imbalanced deal, but actually proposed it.

I've been tempted to buy things that I wouldn't have otherwise to have some trade bait on hand but haven't really done it because I'd rather spend my kaiju budget on stuff I know I want.

Just curious, do most members here consider it bad to buy some stuff in hopes of trading for otherwise-unattainable stuff for a collecton? I realize that gross hoarding deprives others of their toys, but it seems to me that doing this with some restraint and conscience might not be so bad.

I think it's bad to buy something for $40 today and once it sells out try to sell it for $200, but I don't see anything wrong with trading it for something you want more. If two people agree on a trade two people are happy correct? What's the problem????????????????????????

Point taken, but I was actually talking about the new mini Damns. I don't believe they are being sold for $200 (yet), but it wouldn't surprise me either.

I bought extras to trade twice, but it turned out I wasn't very good at predicting the future. If anyone wants a Japan Dumb Luck or a yellow Calli let me know!

I can see if you bought the toy because you really liked it. Then decided once you got it that its just not for you. Its one thing to trade figs but when new releases are posted for trade a week or 2 after they come out.....

Let the people who really want it a chance to get it.

To me it looks like people have been buying up figs they think are gonna get them their grail of the hour.

But this is just what I see judge for your self.

I WONT point fingers so don't ask. The people who buy up figs with only the intentions know who they are.

If you want to make money sell your investment and stash the money for when it pops up.

Who really cares? Most people who try this will end up with a bunch of stuff they don't want and no money to buy what they do.

When stores start releasing things by lottery, at some random time on a given night or just flip their own toys on ebay you are bound to see more of this type of toy gambling.

I think the Hong Kong "factor" is causing people to get a little crazy too.

Don't blame the collectors. I am sure this trend will pass.

Hmm..i think some people do this, but I've seen some really excellent items come up recently and the trades people are looking for are pretty far in my opinion.

Hell I put up a list of rumbles this week and barely got a bite on a trade. Granted a ton of people offered me money, bt I'm patient enough to wait for what I want.

The Hong kong factor definitely has played into the whole hype machine lately though. There are good deals to be had, you just need to look around a bit more.

i think flipping is a pointless waste of time, and buying to trade for other things is nearly the same. is it worth all the time and effort to resell a $40 figure for $75? it seems pretty rare that a new toy can sell consistently for 4x-5x its retail. for the small potential profit versus the time spent and risk of nobody biting on it, it seems a lot smarter to just get a real job.

I have a hard enough time keeping up with about 1/10th of the toys coming out that I want to be worried about buying duplicates.

I don't mind the idea of someone buying something with the idea of taking it out of a flippers hands just to be sold at cost/or traded on here if it's within their means..

This is the reality of it in a nutshell. I admit that in the past I've bought things that I thought would be desirable on impulse, but ended up reselling or trading for what I paid, simply because I would have felt bad.

Likewise, I've gotten stuck with a couple of things that no one would touch with a stick, for one reason or another. With a few exceptions, the toy world makes the stock market look predictable, in terms of what comes out on top. So nowadays I restrict my buying to things I believe will stay in my collection for a reasonable amount of time, and it's working out fine.

sounds like everyone wants the same things and the trade bait just gets juicer everyday. patience is key....

I cherrypick all over the place and buy what I like and not for trade.

Occasionally, I fuck up and end up with duplicates cause I order from a couple different sources (in case one vendor can't fullfill the order).

I think you missed the point.

Most of us buy outside of what we usually collect. And yes we sometimes end up with the odd figs that we want to sell or trade.

But what I'm saying is we all know pretty much who collects what. And when these people are obviously buying figs they don't collect just to trade for what they do collect. Because their wants list reflects this.
