I think Olivas' toy is a good example of what happens far too often when "2-D" artists move into the "3-D" forum; the sense of "otherworldliness" disappears. Nothing against Kathie or anyone else in particular, but much of what I like about her work involves the surreal backrounds and overall "flatness" of the images. Once you bring the characters into the real world, amidst household items, etc. some (or much) of the mystery disappears. I love the paintings of hers that we have, but unless the finished product is radically different, I'll probably have to pass on this.

While I do like Kathie's art, I find that her toys and customs have been very repetitive with respect to design. Don't get me wrong, I think she is super talented but I just feel like all her custom/toys are very very similar....and in turn I find it lessens the desirability of this piece....

I hadn't realised Tokidoki has become so popular. I remember seeing his work when I was not long out of art college about 9 years ago. His work would pop up on design forums or portal sites and the odd design mag. His web sites were cool, but rarely updated if I remember. His work hasn't changed at all, just got noticed. He does do some smooth work though.
As for Oliva's work, I think the toy looks nice but wouldn't buy one. I've never been a fan of her 'art' (I see it as more illustration) and see her as one of the KR generation artists - not saying much, just pretty pics for the masses.

My Mom is actually digs Tokidoki. She went to SDCC last year just to check it out for a day and picked up a signed fan from him. She said she liked his work and he was a really nice young man. Cracked me up. I dig his work.

Take a look at he clay (??) and resin cast figures. They are fantastic, the squidbaby is really creepy in 3d.
