nothing to be embarrassed about. the toy is probably really cool
but i think the whole idea has left the realm of art and just is made to sell at this point
i'm a graphic designer... making stuff to sell regardless of its artistic merit is what i know
i wish i had the chance where i am in my career to make works of art and love everything i created

I don't think it was ever really in that realm so i guess I'm not that disappointed. All this stuff has always just been made to sell. If Kaws wanted to focus on his art I think we would see a lot more paintings from him.

well, yea i see what you mean.
back in the 90s when he had the whole guerilla art thing going, pasting the skulls on ads of hot women selling perfume or whatever... that is what i was getting at. that sort of expression i can appreciate more. it was a new way of looking at everyday icons pasted all over big cities
that said - i dont want it to sound like there is anything wrong with making money off your artwork either. if you can get rich then by all means! i wish i could too!

I personally would have liked to see something a bit less obvious in choice of characters. Something like the 3 spirits - Obiwan, Yoda and Anakin clear blue vinyl with his signature skull would be . Personally KAWS' Tokyo Tribe and Vader takes are too forced and the faces are not as clean/cartoon like as his previous releases. Are these real releases or just an exhibition piece? I just can't get away from comparing with those releases by Hot Toys, it just doesn't have that KAWS edge to it.

I really cant figure out if the toy is trying to say anything, and Im guessing it isnt, but it will probably still be a super nice toy. Nothing wrong with an awesome looking darth vader toy!

I think the whole point of kaws is he picks ubiquitous pop-icons. Hence why he used mickey mouse, astroboy, darth vader, simpsons, michilin man.

plus those clear blue spirit figs have been done to death.. (not that vader has not) but vader has the staying power that we never get tired of. (I think)
I own none of kaws' work, but would pick up the vader if I have the chance.
do we think anyone could tell a skull faced guy in robes was obi-wan, even with saber in hand? It would look like a kaws inspired monk.

I see your point, it was just a random thought. I guess once I get to see the Darth Vader in detail... we'll all know. That Hasheeme is really not that great IMO. I love the original vinyl they released, so maybe that's why.

Just when it looked like KAWS was wallowing in stagnation he comes right out of left field with a Kimpsons Vader and Hasheem...

If this is Medicom, then it's legit & George Lucas will be demanding $$$, as well. Tacked onto the usual Kaws premium pricepoint, wonder how expensive this will be?

Paying Lucas off would allow for Kimpsons Boba Fetts, Admiral Akbars, Yodas, Chewies, you name it.
Since this guy apparently has no desire to expand his range a Lucas license might be a good idea, then try to license the Smurfs.
Weak sauce.

The KAWS Vader might be cool as well. I guess as long as you don't consider KAWS an artist but rather a marketer then everythings good as far as what he churns out and recycles.
Another board member summed this up well so I'll just quote him:
Pogue wrote: I don't think it was ever really in that realm so i guess I'm not that disappointed. All this stuff has always just been made to sell. If Kaws wanted to focus on his art I think we would see a lot more paintings from him.
Adopting this attitude is wisest with KAWS stuff I think.
Low expectations lead to less disappointment when he keeps lowering the creative bar on his product.

Why is it a Kimpsons Vader?

Its easier than saying "a Vader with Xs for eyes, KAWS ears/X-Bones Ears, and KAWS atypical mouth" basically I meant transposing the exact same design over any cultural icon and calling it something new.
Technically its not a "Kimpsons Vader" but rather one with the same characteristics that KAWS recycles on every design.

Could say "Darth Kawsder" or "KAWS Vader" or "Kader" or....well, I'm done.
