I didn’t have any particular theme or inspiration in mind, beyond my usual touchstones (HP Lovecraft, Captain Beefheart, Tohl Narita) and the inspiration I get from the great textures and shapes in the sculpt itself- I knew it would lend itself really well to a lot of drybrushing, having painted one with that technique last year. I also knew I wanted to mainly work with my interference paints (tiny colored micah chips in a neutral medium) on the black vinyl base, and that I wanted to use the same basic color palette (purple, blue, green, with reds and golds for highlights) on all, but applied differently. The end result was a group that is not identical from one to the next, but definitely recognizable as members of one “family” of Sludgies.

I'd be curious to hear anything the other guys might have to say on this- we were sharing pics with each other as we finished via email, but we didn't get into discussing inspirations/themes...

I really liked the purple base of the figures. I just wanted to keep it bright. So I didn't a metallic teal rub. Which with all the texture on this figure. It's quite a task. Then the florescent pink of course and crazy bright eyes.

I knew it would be easy to go dark. So I went the other way.

I just thought a bunch of us might use blue (and I was so tempted to do so) so I tried to go with a different color set. I paint a lot in my head and after thinking a few variations, I thought the Laker fans will love it and the non-Laker fans will hate it so I added another color . They originally had gold eyes but decided they were too meh. It was actually really tough to paint for me because I like to have a fair amount of vinyl showing...but that soon got all covered up. I have a shot of the back somewhere but I haven't posted it.
Not sure if anyone else picked up on this but there was a brief time when there was a fair amount of purple vinyl toys coming out. It's interesting to me because they started appearing a few weeks after Rich had told us they were being cast. I had a good chuckle but was also kind of worried that the color might not be well received.

Ungawa222 yours are black vinyl, I thought they all were purple?

Gatchabert: i live in LA and couldnt care one way or the other about the Lakers but love gold & purple! Color scheme really works for me overall

I wanted to just paint it cool looking. I hope I succeeded. I named my paint scheme "Dross Giant". It has a bit more depth in blue than the picture shows.

Yeah, I was the stick in the mud who didn't want to go with purple (even though it was a particularly awesome purple)!

It was just because I really had a plan to use the interference paints from the moment Rich floated this idea, and they really work best against black surfaces. Rich was great about letting me be the odd man out, and luckily that didn't interfere with the other dudes getting the purple lot they wanted.

Fun fact (and I hope you don't mind me sharing this, Phil): Phil was the first one to finish his group (waaaaay before the rest of us), thanks to being holed up at his folks' house after Hurricane Sandy... maybe one of the few positive things that came out of Hurricane Sandy!

Haha yeah, I forgot about that. Hurricane sandy knocked out the power at my home and work for 3 or 4 days, but my folks home was fine (which is where my workspace is) so since I was off from work, and there was no power at home I put my nose to the grindstone and banged them out kinda quick.

Theyre all so good its hard to pick a favorite, but I do love green. It really looks like a lot of love and work went into this work.

If I didnt have this sculpt already, I'd totally be counting the minutes until they come up. Best of luck to anyone aiming for one of these, they all are great colors.
