That is sweet, and fitting, considering KAWS' version of the iconic crossed out eyes effect is a direct rip off of a shot from an early Simpsons episode, when Bart was "dead" and laying in a casket. Caught that a little while ago while watching a DVD set - lowered my estimation of KAWS even further.

Yay Motor!!

I thought everything KAWS' did was a rip off of pop culture, Mickey Mouse, Astroboy, Simpson's, etc. . .

Yeah i reckon that's true.

At least Pushead was able to turn the Companion into a work of art.

I like this a lot. It's using Kaws' aesthetic, but pushing it farther than he has in a while. Good job, Motor.

XX'ed out eyes have been used in animation to convey death for a very long time. it predates the simpsons by decades.

Nice custom.

I know that.

Hmm...

Tried to explain what I was talking about by referring to an exact scene...

Tried also Googling for a pic of the scene I was talking about. Couldn't find it...

The Simpsons animators drew Bart's eyes crossed out in a unique style, with the lines thicker at one end. Basically, look at the KAWS lines, and you'll know what I mean. They aren't just "X's".

The KAWS crossed out eyes are not a generic cross. They are a unique style, which, all evidence suggests, were lifted directly from that episode. Given all the other Simpsons related stuff in KAWS work, it shouldn't come as a surprise.

I'm sure that simpsons episode was the first time that was ever drawn that way.

Maybe they stole it from Kaws? I don't know enough about Kaws, but would the timing be right?

Sooo..... was Kaws not doing his thing than? Again, I know nothing of Kaws other than the basics, not a fan (not a hater either, just never cared.)

I think he started hitting mag covers in the mid-1990s or so. Google search would clear that up. I'm sure Wikipedia has an entry as well. Happy researching!

Look the thing is like Loco said KAWS bites images and iconography from pop culture left and right.

There's no reason to suspect otherwise here. On the contrary it should be assumed the eyes (and everything else he has done) are a bite unless proven otherwise.

Why the hell are we even talking about this?

Post-SDCC Kaiju disorder?

I don't care that much hahaha!

I dunno, I don't generally care about KAWS, but it's a slow work day for me and I'm bored as hell.

I like the 5YL figures with their simplicity and lines.
This is too mashed up for me.

Sometimes I think those of us who don't get it are trying too hard to find something that isn't there. What appeal I do see lies in the clean lines and good proportions of his toys, as well as that instant recognition factor regarding the hybridized pop/corporate elements. Also, while there are "fine" artists working with similar ideas with more focus and better execution, their works aren't really toys and are exponentially more expensive, so accessibility to what some consider a tangent of pop art is probably a factor.

Props to motorbot for a well-executed custom that I wouldn't have instantly recognized as his work. He was clearly thinking about KAWS' own palette of references ... it's almost more like a collaboration in that way.
