Post why paypal first?
what's the point of getting people to paypal to claim something you are selling instead of people PMing you first? that just seems to be open to someone getting POed, shafted out of money, or something.

Probably because anyone who's tried to sell here has been PM'ed with a commitment to buy something then strung along waiting for payment. It can be kind of frustrating when you offer pricing on something with the RFSO feeling and then get told for three weeks to wait only to be totally stood up for some random excuse.

How does the seller avoid ripping off the buyers who don't "win," given PayPal fees? Even if the full amount is repaid, PayPal still takes a bite out of the refund, don't they? Or am I wrong?

I just tell people no holds. If someone doesn't pay it stays up until someone does.

I think everyone just has a different technique at selling. I mean someone ask for immediate payment and then don't ship out your item for a week or more. Others pay and ship out quickly.

Thanks rhinomilk.

I find it easiest to just go with the first person who offers to pay. I know not everyone does that. Whatever works within the rules...

it seems to me in some situations it also has to do with the seller needing the cash asap. when its there its sold, end of story. so theres no messing around with when the money comes in.

Yep, that should solve negate issues of non-payment or hold craps

It just seems to me there's a whole new crop of people...trying to act like Stealth and his sales tactics

Dean, if you look on the page of the payment (View details) at the very bottom there is a refund buyer link. It refunds the payment to the buyer in full. You can also refund part of the payment if some problems arise later like the person buying is not happy with the quality, breakage in shipment etc....

And PL - quit making an avatar out of yourself with these questions!!LOL

Yeah, info appreciated. That definitely explains it. I'd never done a refund before so I must have skipped over that feature. Thanks again.

i somewhat agree with the original post. i've had a situation in the past that i paypaled payment for something, and someone else beat me to it. they refunded my money, but it took 3 days to clear. in that time i missed out on some stuff that i could've/wanted to buy but sold before my funds were reimbursed....

Yea, that's the worst part.
Waiting on a refund sucks ass.

I haven't seen this too often, but I have seen it. I solve the problem by not buying from people who demand money first and then will notify you later if you actually got it. It's uncivilized. I'm not sending anyone my hard-earned cash without some reasonable assurance that the item will be mine.

I don't string people along and I pay when I promise to pay. If people are going to assume up front I'm a loser that will wind up cheating them, then fuck 'em. They can keep their damned toy.

Same here but there on a public message board with 900+ members there are some people who don't hold that same logic.

It bums me out when people want to buy something, ask for your paypal address and then don't pay you for 4 days.

The only reason i've gone with, what I call as the Stealthtank model of selling, is plain and simple. I'm tired of people saying they want something and then disappearing into the ether. Money talks, bullshit walks. Plain and Simple.

Yep it avoids creating sour grapes with board buddies when they know up front that you require prompt payment (or no holds). Having said that,,one should make all efforts to ship asap since the buyer payed equaly fast.

If that's his method, then you're right. I won't. ever. It's not my style. I fully appreciate the explanation of why sellers do this, but I'm just giving my thoughts. I wouldn't blindly dump money into a sellers account for a chance at something. It's the principal of the thing.

Like I said, I fully understand that. My only point in posting in this thread was in some instances you are throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I think sellers have noone but themselves to blame if I'd let a buyer string them along for days or weeks without paying. I can't think of any sob story that would cause me to keep extending things after what I assume were many many broken promises to pay. Once someone has my payment information, I'll hold something for someone 24 -48 hours. No more.

You'll feel differently after you've been here for a while. There is a certain level of trust on the boards that leads to results both good and bad.

Agreed. Now if only ST will let me have a hold box with him.
