Personally, I think that includes welcoming and helping new collectors - ie, giving them the benefit of the doubt rather than looking for a reason to rip them a new one.

Okay, I added the word "should" when nobody used it in that context. Mea culpa.
However, you kept pointing out that some people get abused here and that the BBS hasn't always been a friendly place, so a sense of tacit approval was what I was getting from your posts.
So let me ask you directly: do you, Locomoco, think it's alright to bash people here? If so, when and why? And as a further follow-up, do you think it will help Skullbrain as a community?
1. We don’t expect new kids to know everything, but we expect you to at least
put in the effort. The search function is your friend. Use it before you ask a
question that has already been answered.
2. There are reasons we don’t talk about certain subjects, and there are other
places to yap about that stuff. Head there for that kind of talk, don’t try
and bring it here.
3. Learn what sarcasm is on the board and develop a thick skin, or you won’t
like it here.
4. Selling and re-selling – this is important. You need to read the flipping thread.
5. Off-site links – remember where you are before you go posting links.
Don’t poop where you eat unless you plan on eating poop.
6. Yes, everyone here is a jerk, we already know that though.
7. If you wouldn’t say it in real life, don’t say it here.
8. Don’t offer a brand new toy that was just released in trade for a really old
rare toy or prepare to feel the wrath. You would think this is obvious but
you would be surprised.

Only thing I can say is don't be too eager to bash. Think before you leap. If someone made a dumb blunder, they can probably be nudged towards the right way to do things with some simple information or a pointer to one of the FAQs.

There are quite a few comments of the sort "I can't believe how cheap XXXXX toy is going for these days!" yet noone seems willing to connect it with the fact that the board is openly hostile to 'new blood' and is seemingly quite proud of it. I don't know if it started out that way, but this message board is now one of, if not *the* major nexus points for fans of this hobby. Attitudes that may have prevailed in the past may not be the best attitudes moving forward, assuming you'd like your collection to retain its monetary value. It is something to think about, at any rate.
And as I've said, people aren't hostile to people just because they are new. People get bopped on the head because they are either lazy, inappropriate, or both in their initial postings. Most problems are going to be due to asking obvious questions that a simple search would yield multiple answers, questions about non-relevant toys, or people obviously out to make a quick buck.
And not to be crass, but I don't think most die hards on the board could really care too much about the monetary value of their collections.
If people want to participate on the board, it really isn't asking much to have them check out the FAQs or use the search function to see if questions haven't already been asked hundreds of times before.

I've made some of the best friends I've ever had through this hobby. Nothing is more cool than going to a new city and hanging out with toy nerds.
get involved.

Strange, isn't it? Considering that I quit the last two moderator jobs I was given. ;p
