I was going through my pic from my trip to Japan a few months back and came across a pic I took at Mandarake in Nakano. The store clerk was very nice about letting me take only one pic, especially since taken any at all is strictly prohibited!!!
Anyways, the pic is of a toy that totally made me do a double take as I was window shopping the vintage selection, perphaps mummy boy's origins have already been dicussed, or even obvious to the general toy collecting public, but I can;t help but ask if this figure is in any ways linked to mummy boy? Or if this is absolutely coincidence.

Great find.

Holy smokes! Uncanny. Cool looking toy. I wonder what it is. A mascot of some sort?

I saw this last trip as well and about stopped in my tracks when I saw it. I was sorely tempted to buy it, but the price was pretty high. Also, his arm is folded behind his back, but man, did it sure look similar! Crazy!

it seems odd to see this & can't remember its name but i am fairly sure it was an advert toy and not a commercial product just like the pillsbury dough boy, lil green sprout etc.
curious brian, what inspired you make the mummy boy in that crude mascot style? do you collect old advert figures? i love them & wish someone would reinvent 'Nauga' in vinyl. remember those?

You mean like this?

nah i've seen those, not a fan. they don't have the vintage charm dispite being a clone, maybe too 3-D. i think the rights for 'real' ones are actually now owned by a company that makes clothes for teen age girls but not certain. i have a few of the vintage ones they are pretty funny.

http://www.nauga.com/promoitems_nauga.htmlAs you can see they are a mere shadow of their former selves but you can still get em...

The original Naugahyde dolls had some real charm in the middle of the staid world of fabric coverings.
The new ones are... Wow... Those are just... Who cut them? Do they have some 9-year-olds in a basement sewing them based on crayon drawings?

Bootleg: Exactly! I mean, the eyes on the new one are too small. Are they stick-on googly eyes! And the mouth has NO TEETH!!!
This is what they should look like:

I've seen repro Naugas in Tokyo that look MUCH better than the ones on the US Naugahyde site. Apparently they are made in Japan from US made Naugahyde.
Here are some pics:
The price is pretty ridiculous though, around $150 for some, but then again with the coin we drop on figures around here...

This guy's very cool. Looks glittery. Can't see spending 100+ on one of these though.
