About Mods & Trolls

Wed Aug 08, 2012 9:34 am

I was going to post this in Mike Like Bike's sales thread, but it was deleted before I could.

Firstly, apologies to MLB for adding another post to his sales thread about this stuff.

I didn't know where to say this, but since this conversation keeps its' focus here:

I kind of figured that whichever mod deleted the offensive posts did so because they wanted to cut out the problem, but didn't have time to do something more involved. I can understand, but wouldn't it be better to have redacted the offensive bits from those posts? Like this maybe:

"Purple Bat can
suck donkey dicks
."

That way anyone interested in knowing the true character of the language can look for it, but random folks don't have to get blindsided reading some trolls' BS.

Who knew you could use the spoiler tag in a signature? I have nothing productive to add to the conversation. However, I have a new sig! :D

^ Hm, hadn't thought of that. Don't everyone go putting spoiler tags in your sigs. I could see that getting annoying real quick.

Moderators should not be editing or deleting posts or deleting threads unless there is sensitive material (i.e. personal contact information like phone numbers, addresses, et cetera) contained within them. I see absolutely zero reason other than the one I stated where that should be tolerable behavior for someone whose responsibility is to help keep order. Editing or deleting posts or threads is an abuse of power deemed worthy by one person's discretion. It's not fair to anyone. Even locking threads is kind of silly, but at least it's not just up and disappeared.

Nuff said.

I am not pro-censorship but recognize that (a) those of us who are not mods should maintain some degree of respect for the decisions of those who are. They're human and we may not always agree with them, but ultimately they're entrusted by the site's owner to moderate by Skullbrain's standards. Also (b) Brian has made it clear that there's no place for racist, homophobic, or other forms of hate speech here, so I can appreciate why those comments were swept away as opposed to being left up. Immature hate speech is just a totally out-of-line taint on the very international, diverse and multicultural community that we J-vinyl toy collectors are.

My two bits. Other opinions are available.

I basically agree, but I think that "moderating" is very different from "censoring". Like Jason already pointed out, I also believe sweeping offensive comments away only serves the offenders by hiding their offensive bullshit from the rest of the community. And since SB's policy on homophobic hate speech etc. has been stated repeatedly, aside from being part of the FAQs, I really don't see why these people aren't just being banned instead of being given two and a half verbal warnings (and how exactly am I supposed to tell if someone has made, say, homophobic comments before if those comments are deleted immediately?).

Yes, I have said/posted stupid shit myself and I surely believe in second chances - but then I also believe that if somebody feels the need to use homophobic rhetoric on a public message board, it's probably pretty safe to assume they're a fucking asshole.

agreed completely. he basically let the perpetrator get off scott free.

also, this is probably the 3rd or 4th time i've seen the same shit from this new user since they've begun posting on here, but since he's always being censored, and mods are not around enough to see it, the right people are not realizing that he keeps getting away with it.

I can't. I suppose that is precisely where my opinion on this differs. The way I see it, members who say those types of things should be the head on a stake. They should be the poster child, the billboard for how not to act here and what not to do on here. I certainly don't condone it in any form, but if you're going to throw around cock-sucking, dick-stroking, playground insults, do it with your equally scumbaggy friends 'in real life.' It simply does not belong here, there is no arguing that. As you've said, there's no room for it in a community as diverse as ours and it should not be tolerated even once. What I'm getting at is that their actions should not be buried or ignored, but put in the spotlight so people who aren't browsing the forum every five seconds like me are made aware of it. That is the main point I am trying to make. But I suppose I'm wrong.

Adding to that, threats of physical violence getting a pass is even more amazing to me.

I think we are a generally very well behaved community. All of us are adults (most in age, but not nearly all in maturity (myself included sometimes)) and I think we can police ourselves without a moderator locking or deleting anything. People are made aware of flippers or bogus behavior here all time, but it always gets buried somehow, some way. Saying 'welp, you guys are arguing, case closed,' is the most asinine way of handling any given situation aside from a personal spat that really should be handled via private message.

As I let bansheebot know in a PM, I never saw the deleted messages before they were deleted, so it's possible that my perspective would be a little different if I had. I thoroughly detest online hate speech, both in general principle, and having been the target of it at another site where a certain troll has even gone so far as to try to intimidate and harass me outside of that site and offline. Serious cyberstalker nonsense, so I'm not insensitive to strong opinions about this sort of thing. I didn't realize until now that physical threats were made. That shit is not only unacceptable, it's illegal.

I respect Chad, Brian, and the mods in general which is why I threw my two bits into the ring. Absolutely no disrespect for anyone who was critical of the deletions was intended, just to be clear. This isn't an argument, just a discussion as far as I'm concerned. I totally see where bansheebot is coming from and just wanted to offer that in the same spirit of community respect that prompted my original comment. I may not be the most active or deep-pockets collector around but I care passionately about this hobby and community, and have a big mouth. :)

Peace all.

Yeah, Russ Blue has been cyberstalked by this S&S88 guy. Russ' sig used to have a quote from it, something about penises, I can't remember. It's painfully... stupid? I don't know a really appropriate word here.

Please mods, take it a little easier on the deletions. I don't want to be offended, or make anyone have to put up with being offended, but the board members should each have the chance to make that decision about what they think of certain posts on their own. If you delete it, it means that whoever said it got to put that stuff out there on someone else, and when it's erased then they get to act like it never happened to anyone not 'lucky' enough to have seen it.

Besides that, now poor Mike Like Bike has to totally repost his sales. I know, it's a privilege that we are allowed to sell stuff here, but was nuking the whole thread really necessary?

Also, unless I am mistaken, Bansheebot never used any profanity stronger than shit/fuck/damn/chocolate milk.

Okay, so the next time this happens, if I simply move the thread to the hidden area, most of you will not be able to see the offending posts.

Are you all okay with that?

Have you even read this thread, or do you not have time?

In my opinion, no, that would not be okay and I will explain why.

I'm guessing that is the case for Mike's sales thread already, because of this:
You are not authorised to read this forum.

So, I'm assuming it's somewhere in moderator limbo on a hidden forum. If you mean 'most of you' as in 99% of us (there are 14 mods here), will not be able to access it, then no. Doing that is the exact same thing, in principle, as outright deleting posts and threads -- Hiding it and not letting other members see.

And I had no idea our board was British.

I just want to know who to avoid. I'm guessing it's S&S88?

you got it.

Making the offensive language into a spoiler would be better, that way it would still be there but not for anyone to see. And instead of marking it at spoiler you can mark it as offensive or some shit like that.

Late to the party here...

The only thing I see wrong with the above situation is that the offending poster didn't get banned...

If someone posts something offensive enough to be deemed delete-worthy by a mod,,,then that person should get the boot...

The only time I deleted a post,,,homeboy got the chop...believe that!!!
