I like Old Boy as well; its a kind of evolution from the hyper kinetic filmmaking of Takashi Miike. Though, I still very much like Miike. Nothing like a meet cute and romantic dinner in an apparent rom com, suddenly interrupted by a lion leaping out of a bag and mauling people in "Audition." Great stuff!

I haven't seen "Tell Me Something," however I've heard good things about it. It was one of the first big budget Korean films to rival production costs of those from Hollywood. South Korea has always taken great pride in their films, however only recently has the industry seen larger international acclaim. It's interesting to see common themes such as that of the misunderstood, violent young male and an emphasis on moral ambiguity. See Kim Ki Duk's Bad Guy, for example. A love story of sorts that begins with kidnapping and forced prostitution. Kind of like a moden day Tennessee Williams film.

I've also heard good things about the 2006 Korean Monster movie "The Host."


Incidentally, I think the best films of the last 5-10 years have come from the east. That is where all the originality is coming from. I think Wong Kar Wai's in the Mood for Love is one of the top 10 films ever.

Not to hijack, but along the lines of asian films:
A really interesting Japanese director is Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Charisma and Bright Future are two of my favorites. He also did Cure, Pulse and a few other movies that tend to be catogorized as horror, but are really about other things. (They remade Pulse into a crap Hollywood release - the original movie is really about isolation. It may be a little slow for someone unfamiliar with his style.)

Tell Me Something is pretty good. it's basically along the lines of a Korean Se7en.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa is one of my favorite directors. I recently read that his next film is going to be a version of Clive Barker's "The Midnight Meat Train", which should be awesome because the short story is great and I think KK is the perfect choice stylistically to make that into a movie.

now I have a nice list for movies to go look for and watch. my parents got all into all the korean soap operas for a little while... heard those got exremely popular in Japan last year, but has sorta tapered off since.

I also like The Quiet Family and Foul King

my name is jake ... i'm 27 and am a phd student in san diego for another year or two depending on how lazy i am. i too have always collected random things (i've found that it's really difficult for someone who has never collected anything to comprehend the act of collecting), and started picking up toys in '05 and got my first secret base figs a few months in. overall my toy collection is now much smaller than it was at the high point as i've shifted a lot of my resources into buying art for the walls, but i've just about run out of wallspace now so i'm getting back into toys again. i buy lots of stuff that i like and then let it sit around for a while to see if i *really* like it, which isn't something i can decide in a short time ... so i end up buying and selling a lot of stuff as a byproduct of collecting.

the host is fun i like it, but i urge you to see his first film Memories Of Murder based on Seoul's first ever serial killer case, it is amazing, moody and atmospheric, no splatter or gore, just so amazingly made, seriously guys and gals it is one of my fave koren films PLEASE see it, you wont be dissapointed.

ok. my name is scott. i grew up in CT. i moved to CA about 6 years ago. i presently live in hollywood with my dog mugger. i work for a small design firm by day. freelance a bunch by night. i've been known to cohort with chicks who do the naughty for a livin. my works been nominated for several awards which i'm pretty stoked on. i accepted an award on stage at the kodak theater. i felt like i had just won an oscar.

i used to horribly run a small hardcore record label. i was served with cease & desist orders for the name by some twerp in yellowcard and their lawyers right after they got huge. so i had to change the name of the label and after that i just lost interest in blowing all my money on flat circular pieces of colored vinyl and decided to blow it on beautifully sculpted vinyl instead.

i've loved godzilla and gamera growing up. i've got both of them tattooed on me along with mothra and a host of other shit. when this girl broke up with me years ago i was so bummed, i decided to cheer myself up by buying a super premium giant godzilla. another one of my ex's used to drag me around the 3rd street promenade in santa monica and once i decided to step into the KR store there. saw nothing remotely cool in there except for a copy of s7 with king waldar on the cover. my first neo-kaiju fig was the s7 alien chicken fever and since then my apt has been over run with awesome vinyl.

today i bought a killer rat fink toy for 16 bucks from the rock-a-billy store down the street from my office. im stoked!
