Same here. Disney wouldn't dare release that Song of the South stuff in the English-speaking world these days, so you've got a real relic there.

It took me a while, when growing up, to realize that not all American childhoods were as Disney-saturated as ... others.

I've heard rumblings of them re-releasing the movie for a few years now. They were going to issue a disclaimer at the beginning to reflect it as a historical piece, but I doubt it will happen.
Oddly enough, it's the basis for one of my favorite rides and I don't think the masses realize it.

Disney won't release Song of the South in the Anglophone world due to pressure from the NAACP. They probably can't figure out what to do with the property, as they traditionally market their old assets that were originally made for children ... for children. As I understand, it's in print in South Korea for whatever reasons.

Song of the South and Disney's WWII propaganda cartoons are important historical/cultural documents, despite the now-offensive stereotypes that they feature. The animation and songs in SotS are fantastic. I wish The Mouse would create a new line of DVDs that emphasize historical context. They could do an "educational" release of Song of the South with materials explaining not only its history and context, but also documentation of the objections to it. That way, people who want to can see the film, and those who object to its imagery can use it as an educational tool about the history of black stereotypes, slavery, and slavery's fallout in the USA.

The irony of the suppression of the film is that it's ultimately anti-racist. However, the NAACP thinking is that "romantic" images of the old south romanticize the social evils of those times. I disagree on the principle that you don't make social evils go away by sweeping them under the carpet.

Or "worse," do the internet thing and not pay for the bootleg. I mean, there IS a way I've managed to see it since the last official USA theater release in the early '70s. Lots of those WWII Donald Duck vs. the Japanese type movies are out there too, it's just that the condition of the boots is generally really poor.

Yeah we saw these at the Philly film fest this year. Leonard Maltin (known disney historian) came to intro them. it was great. A bunch of parents brought their kids thinking "oh look disney cartoons!" we literally heard one kid yelling 'Heil Hitler! Heil Hitler!"
