Yeah, I just need it to last for like 3 years. I'm going XP, Vista sounds like it'll give me a headache.

As far as Vista crashing, I have my machine running all day and it has become pretty stable. Whether you go XP or Vista, there are updates, and you should always update whether they're recommended or required. No matter what you go with, be sure you get rid of all the crap software that laptops and some desktops come with. Again, my Vista box runs slow (I'm usually at 85%-95% RAM usage all day) but it is pretty stable.
Link the item you're buying so we can rip it to shreds...hehehe.

I'm staying away from Vista. Major CPU/resource hog, and from what people are saying, you aren't getting much bang for your buck. Plus few notebooks have the specs needed to run the OS 100% smoothly, especially in terms of utilizing Direct X 10's full potential.
In terms of what notebook to buy, I've heard horror stories (a lot) about Sonys and Acers going to pot after a year.
I've been using IBMs for 6 years. One I gifted to my GF a couple of years ago. Both books still running strong. Now that they're Lenovo I have no idea if there's a quality difference but I doubt it.
