Post the Golden Boy
I realize that this may ruffle a few feathers around here, but this is something that I've been wanting to do for a long time and over the last few weeks have managed to find the time to pull it off.

I've been pondering the whole collecting thing some more and what it is exactly that draws people in. Heated debate around here over whether toys should be customized or at least which toys can be customized, what certain figures are worth, what people will actually pay for certain rare items, how deperate people are to finally own certain figures etc. etc.

All of this eventually led to my thinking about my own regard for these objects, that are in the end, still just toys. I too however often find myself semi-obsessed and unable to stop thinking about them. How far is to far? How much is too much?

Any ways, because of all of this, I decided to create an idol of sorts. No, I am not worshiping this, nor do I have any sort of shrine built for it! It's just a symbol or representation of my thoughts on this crazy hobby of ours. The entire figure is actually coated in 23 karat gold leaf though and was applied layer upon layer until I ended up with one heavenly skullwing. What's amazing about this material is that it is so incredibly thin that you don't lose any detail on the figure at all; everything, even the little dimples on the skull remain visible.

Man, I need help...

Easter Egg styling!!
Nice thoughts Plover. And a nice custom. I like your idea, and I'm happy all that tiny detail on the skull has remained. The pitted skull and theeth is what makes this toy a nice sculpt.

Thanks Moriachi.

I agree, it's an amazing sculpt and has always been one of my favorites. As a result it seemed the perfect figure for this project.

looks like something some primitive culture would have worshipped.
Brilliant idea. Now I'm off to cast mine in real solid gold and wear it around my neck.

Perfect photoshop Loco. Beautiful job Plover. You now need to track down the Gold Brain (or hell, just gold leaf one). I have a small trove of figs that I want to customize, now I just need time and some ideas.

can you move the arms and head without worrying about the gold flaking off? Did you apply any topcoat to it?

Man, that's awesome! So is that pic Loco!

Put a little ring on his head, and you can wear him from a dookie rope, maybe some diamond eyes too. Bling bling!

Yes, I applied a top coat on completion to avoid this issue as this was a concern of mine, especially around the arms.

The gold leaf itself is applied using a special type of glue called sizing as well. It is brushed onto the surface first and the gold leaf is then applied. Any loose gold is then brushed off to create a perfectly covered surface.
