Another Kaiju Auction - Phillips de Pury NYC 4.26
Well, I guess Phillips de Pury was happy with the outcome of that London auction selling kaiju, so here's another one set for April 26 in NY. Also several Murakami prints, it'll be interesting to see if the MOCA show has affected his prices. (None of his real top-drawer prints, though.)
I still think that anyone who gets to sell their toy collection by placing it at auction among Rauschenberg, Warhol, Nevelson, Kagan, Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, etc. is a very fortunate seller. (And if that Eames screen goes for anything close to their estimate, I want it!)
The toys are on pages 2, 3 and 7. Again sort of a curious mix, from a '74 Bullmark Ghidorah to a 2008 Nagata HP Damn. Several SB pieces, but at least they haven't discovered RxH quite yet!

Some incredibly sweet stuff there. I'd love that Warhol cow wallpaper, or the Cindy Sherman "Lucy" print. The toys, not so much. (Incidentally, am I the only one who doesn't get the "genius" of Basquiat? If someone could enlighten me, I'd be thankful. No, seriously.)

Yeah, um, that's a little... interesting. There's also a few one-offs by Mark Nagata this time.
Maybe we can figure out where these are coming from...

Thats very disturbing that a custom is being misrepresented as an original Cronic paint job.
I'd also like to know how this came to be and what the seller stands to gain from this auction.

someone should just set up a little NYC style street vendor stand Right in front of that place...the day of the auction...with the exact same toys for sale ~50% off the ridiculous estimates in there.
With a sign saying on the table saying...I will NOT misrepresent what I am selling, unlike the gallery in front of me.

I'm interested to hear what TBS has to say about that Cronic Nougaki x Nerdone piece.

i don't know why there's so much hate regarding this auction. people are recognizing these vynil toys and the artists that create and customize them as legit. If I was TBS, I'd be honored to have one of my pieces be showcased with that line-up.

The curator is a friend. He asked me if I wanted to put a piece in so I agreed. It's not entirely about the money....I think it's cool to have Japanese toys up there next to Warhol and Murakami. And to have a piece that I painted up there too, well that's unbelievable.
As for any mis-representation, it's supposed to read a Cronic x Nerd One Collaboration painted by toybot studios.
Any Japanese artist including Cronic, Blobpus, Secret Base, etc. that would like to participate in the next auction is welcome to contact me and I'll put them in touch with the curator.

Well that changes everything! Congrats guys, It's good to hear everyone getting this great exposure. I thought it was something along the lines of banksy where the galleries just get the art and sell it off without permission.

I wasn't even sure which way this was intended - Whether this meant you should work for free ... or that it should be entirely about the money!

well, the rest of us regular folks probably wouldn't pay $1.2m for a six foot tall Murakami figure on top of an Louis Vuitton trunk either.....

i think this is a fantastic development, too! why are so many so upset about it? It can only mean good things for the creators and recognition from the fine art world which seems to finally be able to say hey, these are ART Toys! not just chunks of plastic. i think that's what this whole movement has been seeking all along, hasn't it?

While I appreciate the work and artistry put into these things, I kind of like them as just toys. It's not as much fun to buy art.

it's art if buy you them from the auction and toys if you buy them from Super 7
