Boris - Smile
Only listened to a couple songs so far, but it's pretty good. Looking forward to plugging in tomorrow when I get to work and have the office to myself. Watched the DVD that came with it - kinda boring videos, but whatever...cool songs! If anyone has the Japanese version and want to trade burns shoot me a PM!

Re: Boris - Smile
I've been listening to it all week and I have really been enjoying it. A good combo of some mellow and some rockers. Mine didn't come with a DVD. Was there a special version?

I'm new to boris in the past 6 months and I really love this album. Make sure to check your local listings, they're touring this summer

Re: Boris - Smile
the Japan version is pretty good. I haven't heard the US version but the track order is different, with some longer tracks in different mixes. "Message" is supposedly quite different.
Some of my friends think they are doing new releases too quickly, but I think the schedule is about right. Rainbow has been one of my favorites from them, so I don't think the quality has suffered. Rock Dream wasn't as good, but that's because Merzbow made the exact same sound over the course of a 2-disc album.

Re: Boris - Smile
Not quite finished with my first listen...playing right now. This album is more similar to Pink and Rainbow than say Amplifier Worship. But I really liked those albums. So far I really dig the mellowness of "My Neighbor Satan" - but the rocker "Statement" before it is great too, if you like Boris' newer sound. Song length is pretty varied - 7min, 3min (x2), 5min (x2), 9min (x2), 15min. A couple of the songs end weirdly where it sounds like they're going to transition into the next track but then the "new" song at the end of the track breaks after a couple of seconds and then the actual new song starts on a new track and isn't related at all to the couple of seconds the ended the previous track. The DVD came if you ordered from Southern Lord. It has 3 videos - "Statement", "My Neighbor Satan" and "Pink". Wata looks very bored playing her guitar. Vog - the Southern Lord version doesn't have a song called "Message"? If you wanna trade copies shoot me a PM.

Re: Boris - Smile
also, if you get a chance to see them this summer, don't pass it up. I've seen them live three times at this point and they are always excellent. There aren't a lot of bands that I think must be seen live to really appreciate, but Boris is one.

Re: Boris - Smile
oh, "Message" is called "Statement" on the US release & in a different mix.
Wata always looks bored. Atsuo on the other hand freaks out whenever he can.

Re: Boris - Smile
Now I just finished listening through Earth's The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull. Wow! Love it! Really like the new direction they've taken. Still sounds like Earth but more refined and mature. Really peaceful...sounds like good music for sitting in the backyard and watching the sunset with a glass of bourbon. I also finally watched the DVD that came with Hibernaculum and was surprised that he plays on a Telecaster. I figured for sustain and resonance that he'd use a Les Paul, or else something more obscure. But I guess the Telecaster makes sense when you figure in the country/western influence.

Re: Boris - Smile
Had the great pleasure of seeing Boris last Friday. It was an overcrowded sweatbox and the Roger Murtaugh idea of being "too old for this shit" crossed my mind but the music totally made up for it. Heavy and technically proficient. They bring their own smoke machine and make you feel totally natural throwing up devil horns. If they're coming through your town, check it out! http://homepage1.nifty.com/boris/top.html

It's a great album. I really should pick up the Daymere version.

Re: Boris - Smile
Just saw them last night, great stuff but this is the 4th and probably the last time for me to see Boris live. I liked them when they were more on the drone and noise end, the rock stuff is fine too but not their shows seem too long with the space out slow songs that seem to last forever. Just doesn't go over well live again, and again.
The drummer always owns the night though

Re: Boris - Smile
I rock Pink at least once a week.
If any of you haven't yet, you should check out Sonic Flower and Bunkur.
Sorry if either band has been mentioned here before...
