Being old has a few advantages, I got to see Minor Threat when i was 16 in DC. I got to see a lot of the great NYHC bands when they came through Pittsburgh...Agnostic Front, Cause For alarm etc. One band I never saw, but always loved: Negative Approach.

Re: who are/were the best hardcore band?
I smoked a joint with HR in Pittsburgh back in 89, he then went on stage and did a sick back flip.Bad Brains were awesome back then. Beat that!! Fugazi in DC with Nation of Ulysses doing their first gig was awesome too!! Also their gig with Swiz was insane at DC Space!! I got to see Heresy loads of times and they ruled here in England. xxx

Re: who are/were the best hardcore band?
I was at a Crucifucks show and onstage about to do a stage dive, then the singer barfed and I slipped in it. I bailed hard. Total rite of passage for me! organic_addict wrote: I smoked a joint with HR in Pittsburgh back in 89, he then went on stage and did a sick back flip.Bad Brains were awesome back then. Beat that!!

Re: who are/were the best hardcore band?
Refused will always be the number one for me. They were an amazing band and one of the few hardcore bands I will still listen to on a regular basis.
SxE: American Nightmare, when they became Give Up The Ghost, they had taken that 3 year hiatus and were just never the same, but the EP's and the one LP they had were amazing.
I'll probably get ripped for that, but I was a late bloomer in music and didn't really get into hardcore until I was 22. And now it all sounds like bad metalcore.

AN were awesome (easily top 5 bands of the 00's) but were never an edge band. their last LP is still amazing as well. they toured australia at the very start of '04 when they were GUTG just before they called it quits and fucking sucked tho.

Whoops! Oh well, yeah, I saw them right before they stopped being American Nightmare, and that was it. I liked Some Girls, but I'm one of the twenty people in Kentucky that are really into the whole Spazcore/Screamo/Noisecore/etc etc whatever the hell you want to call it.

Re: who are/were the best hardcore band?
Nice thread, especially for the anecdotes!
A few alltime faves of mine:
Infest GB 7 Seconds Black Flag Merel (most intense show I've ever been lucky to attend - the singer kept spazzing out so drastically that he basically spent most of the show tripping and/or falling headfirst off the stage, all the while cringing and screaming like a madman. Beautiful.) Integrity Spazz Mohinder Orchid early Some Girls
and of course the almighty SWARRRM. Their first album kills everything. EVERY-FUCKIN-THING.

Re: who are/were the best hardcore band?
this thread got resurrected again?? WTF? its been like 8 months.. Not that im complaining...
American Nightmare- as for this band. Before the rest of the world caught up. They were killer live. destroyed. Then the shows just got too big to enjoy for myself personally. A good friend of mine played drums for them. He always told me their work ethic of practicing was like the ones you read/head about. They practiced for 8 hours a day for days straight. I can always appreciated a band more when I know they do things like that.
mid 80s- dc. Most under appreciated band and one who kills Rites of spring RAIN. most people know them from the STATE OF THE UNION comp of that era. peterbilt(guy) recently released the impossible to find 12" on cd. Worth picking up. We have some songs on bannedindc.com
BURN- one of my all time favorite bands. Really under appreciated as far as that era of rev. As far as members go its pretty much an all star group. Especially when Dicara was in the band. Burn in philly in 98 could have been one of the best shows ive ever seen. tales of shatou has the hardest mosh parts ever. Ill say this one more time. they never put out anything bad. ever. Even their reunion album. how many bands can say that? maybe one.... INFEST!

Re: who are/were the best hardcore band?
Agnostic Front, Cro Mags - NYHC had a serious case of Napoleon Complex, how else could they cope with kids from suburban Orange County outdoing big bad NYC in every possible way. I remember that Sick of It All video where they were taking credit for all this shit that Cali started. WHEAK! G.B.H. - Like many English punk bands they had better album art than actual music (I'm looking at YOU Crass!) DRI - They invented crossover... the 2nd worst thing to happen to hardcore besides Gilman & New Method S.O.D. - I take it back these guys rocked... Avail - Whoops! Sorry I was thinking of ALL, never heard of these kids. I appreciate the sentiment tho sumatra, as long as im pissing off punk n00bs I'm happy EDIT: To clarify, I stopped going to hardcore shows in 85, hence the cranky old manisms
