About the angles, my tripod is a cheap $10 deal, but it can be rotated to any angle needed. But for shooting individual figures, I don't usually use a tripod. I use risers (and CD cases LOL) to achieve different angles.

I used to do everything hand held, but after comparing those shots to shots taken by a stationary camera, my hand helds look tres crappy!

I've only had the tripod for a few weeks, and I love it. I'd recommend looking into one. They're so cheap - what have you got to lose? ;)

True, I will look into it. Well I work from home so I try to focus on my work so keeping my work area clean is important to me. My wife is more the photographer so she has a serious MF tripod and I am too scared to use it. I don't like all the fidgeting of the legs, then base etc. I think I will set it up for glow sessions. I seem to be getting more blurry images from GID shots.

Great collection and pictures. Can only wish i know how to take photos like these.

I'm certainly no photography expert, but in my experience, I'd say the two keys are steadiness and lighting.

I always place the camera on a firm surface (or tripod) and set it on 2 second delay, so there's no camera shake. Even with anti-shake feature built in, you're never going to produce as crisp a shot if it's hand-held.

To get the right lighting for indoor shots, first go with ISO 200 or above (if your camera can handle it without producing noise - mine poops out over 200). I usually don't fiddle with the more exotic manual lighting settings (ex: flourescent, cloudy, etc) but I often open the camera up to + 1/3 metering. So I'll take a shot at that setting and one at 0, and choose from the two.

Finally, it never hurts to sharpen images in an image editing program. I often do that to compensate for the crispness lost when I export theJPG at a roughly 75-80% optimization rate (which really brings down the file size without sacrificing too much in terms of crispness).

Sounds like a lot to do, but once you get into the habit, it's fast and easy.

Wow! Great tips Andy.

Sometimes, if you get bored with all the rules, its also nice to play with your cam and the available light to create interesting images---you can actually play with your toys literally. Angels, perspectives, point of views...hell, you can throw your toy in the air and shoot it and see what happens.

Its nice to maintain a clean, well photographed catalog of your toys, but sometimes its more fun to do it differently.

I myself don't manipulate my photos for color adjustment, etc 'cause I like them raw. Shakes here and there are normal since photos are meant to be used by human hands anyways. Just shoot away!

Absolutely, I'm all for experimenting when it comes to photography. But that's a lot harder to do indoors, when the lighting conditions make it hard to take any kind of crisp shot. For indoor casual shots, then yeah anything goes, but when you're taking catalogue type shots, then the requirements are a bit stricter.

Outdoors....hell you can get away with a lot of crazy stuff!

Indoors, what I usually avoid, if possible, is flash photography.

Same here. Flashes are nice for social/travel shots in poor lighting, but not much more. Sometimes it's fun to force the flash to open when shooting a clear figure outdoors. That can produce some nifty results!

Oh yeah, Calvin - for GID shots, open your camera's light metering up as high as it can go. Also, set it to ISO 400 or above. Set the camera to a 2 second time delay. Then, charge the figures using indoor or outdoor lighting. Take the shots in a small room that doesn't allow much external light in. When you're ready to shoot, have your wife stand next to the light switch. As soon as she turns the light off, snap the pic. It may take the camera a few seconds to process the image, so you definitely want the camera stationary on a table or tripod.
I've gotten really nice results that way. (Check out the GID shot of the Ilanena figures on the first page of my blog.)

Yeah I saw your shots. Intense!
I love how good GID shots actually reflect on the surface it is standing on too.
I will try it out and replace my fugly glow shots.

Andy, there's one thing that you didn't mention that's really important - using white balance. If you don't white balance your camera correctly the colors will be inaccurate. Also, it enables you to use almost any lighting, from sunlight to your average light bulb.

If you're trying for a studio look, I highly recommend buying some photo lamps. They don't even have to be expensive. I used to have a couple of 75 watt bulbs in portable bulb holders- two is usually enough for good cross coverage of light sources (i.e., the shadows cast by one are counteracted by the other, so the entire figure is well-lit). It's easier to compensate for strong lighting (by turning exposure down a click or two) than it is to fix underexposed images in editing software.

I do like the use of shadows in your photos, though. It gives them a feeling of depth. Desk lamps are actually pretty good for taking photos.

Also, I use photo editing software quite a bit to correct clarity and color in my photos. Usually this is to correct washed out or distorted colors due to lighting. I don't consider it cheating if you're already using a digital camera... :P

Flash photography is generally a no-go for me, unless absolutely necessary. I'd rather use a tripod and a longer exposure time for low-light situations.

Post Re: My toy database on Flickr
I will definitely get some cash together for a nicer setup than the one I have now especially lighting. My wife has the Canon 400D so I will try using that instead of my Panaosonic Lumix (which I am using right now). Basically that sketchbook is propped up by another chair!! And the table is where I do my design work so you can imagine how small my apartment is.

My next big spend would be on an airbrush set with all the paint and accessories. I need to start on this as I feel it is a good step up from collecting since I draw and design. I also have created a prototype toy which I have been meaning to further develop into a real toy. I have to learn the steps to make it into the real thing. So knowing how to express myself in customs would help both having more unique one offs in my collection and to also create my own sprays for my future toy. I also want to make that Gundam Evil!!!

well i don't know why i questioned what it was but it is definetely Dororon Enmakun. it was a anime from 73/74, created by Go Nagai of course.
i have a bandai version but not sure if that one is it.

there is the mecha terror windup of this, but you wouldn't suspect he was a boy witch.

go nagai = everything awesome

Lurker, I want to know too. If anyone knows the name of this I would like to add it in the database. The box for this toy is in storage. This figure is so great.

Jason, I knew you would be the first to pick it out. I was going to make the orange bandana so no one can tell. Haha. I was talking to Tim about this and realized it was impossible for me to obtain this since there are only 10 out there. I am sure you have this :P

Andy, every angle looks good. I can't help it!

A boy! haha. OK  I'll add in the description.
I just checked the YouTube videos of it, can't believe it is so naughty for a kid's cartoon.

This is from Devilman WTF!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvG7HMdg ... re=related

Thanks Lurker.

I posted many figures these past few days so check it out.
http://flickr.com/photos/calvinho/

Btw, I have a few figures that need ID.
I didn't get any Japanese TV shows in Sydney as a kid and also when I came back to Hong Kong everything is in Chinese.
I can't read Chinese so I am at a huge disadvantage asking people here for TV shows I want to find.
Anyway....

This is released by Rainbow. Need the name and TV show. I've seen photos before but can't find it now.

What version is this Nougaki?

Nougaki is from Hobby Complex in Nov. 2007. Sold as a lucky draw, I think.

Do you have the header for the Rainbow toy? I remember seeing one in Japan, but can't remember the name.

Oh thanks will update it.

For the header I need to find it again. My header cards are stored in a big box.
I had the name before but I can't remember where I put it...I tried going through toy photos I collect on my computer but no luck.

I will start a robot collection soon. Need to take pics of my nerdy robots next.
