Re: The Clash Tough to choose between the first three. I don't really care for Sandinista (some good songs, but way too much that doesn't do it for me) and I actively dislike Combat Rock and Cut The Crap (which was noticeably, and logically, absent from the poll  ), but IMO the first three are pretty much bulletproof. The fact that they went from point A to point C in what, two years? is utterly amazing to me. I really don't think you can even compare the Clash and the Pistols; as much as some of the Pistols' stuff still gives me a huge adrenalin rush, the Clash are superior in just about every respect.

Re: The Clash Definitely a tough call between self titled UK version and London Calling, but i gotta go with LC. C'mon it has "Train in Vain" on it. I was dorky enough to get the remaster version when it came out and pass on the worn original to my daughter. She loves "Lost in the Supermarket".
I still don't think Sandinista gets enough respect. Sure it's a bit of a rambling mess, but unraveling its layers of sound revealed some true gems. It was something of a teaser for me of the 80s angst, and it opened my eyes to lot of what was going down in the world at the time.

I totally agree about Sandinista! and I feel the same way about Super Black Market Clash. It's also a weird collection of songs but it works for me. That's the one that I find myself listening to over and over again. Gates of the West (from The Cost of Living EP) knocks me out every time. For the readers out there, check out Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer by Chris Salewicz. It's a great bio; well researched and well written. If you like The Clash, I highly recommend it.

Things were just turning around for him when he died, The Mescaleros were just starting to get really good, and he knew he had a lot of great tunes left in him. I'm really glad that his music aged with him, really a testament to his unique vision. The timing of his death was just horrible. He should've been up there with the other great old-rocker-dudes like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Though his death was a total bummer, it seems fitting that a man who put so much of himself into his art and spent so much of his career sticking up for other people, literally, died of a broken heart. That's like folk-hero shit right there.

A random compilation of Clash songs no matter how good just cannot compare to this album on its own.
This is a case of an album being more than the sum of it's songs.
then again I listen to full albums as opposed to hitting shuffle on my ipod

It’s been two years. Does anyone remember The Sandinista Project?
In May 2007, Abe Bradshaw and the crazy geniuses at 2 Minutes 59 Records let me put out a borderline-insane track-by-track tribute to the Clash’s Sandinista!, with a different artist performing each of the album’s 36 songs. (You can read Abe’s version of the origin myth here.) We received mostly positive reviews from publications ranging from The New York Times to Pasadena Weekly, although someone told me that Robert Christgau hated it. More important, it was a great experience: I got to work with many of my favorite performers and create something.
The Sandinista Project is free for a day
The Sandinista Project didn’t set any sales records. Indeed, the number of copies distributed by unauthorized file-sharing sites was greater than the number we sold. We didn’t undertake the project to make ourselves any money (it was a charity record) so I didn’t mind that it was available everywhere for free. That’s the record biz nowadays. But it did bother me that so many of the versions available on torrenting sites (yes, I downloaded a few; depressing research) sounded like crap. They were encoded at low bit rates and sample rates, sometimes there were digital skips, and there was never any packaging. Guys, if you’re going to steal from us, at least make us look and sound good. Please.
To rectify this situation, for one day only, we’re offering, without charge, 256K versions (in M4A format, which works in iTunes and elsewhere) of every song on the record, as well as one bonus cut and PDFs of the CD booklet and packaging. So now, if you decide to steal this, it won’t sound quite so bad. You’ll still be stealing, but you won’t be stealing junk. And hurry up: this is a 24-hour offer. At midnight Pacific Time tonight, I’m taking down the big file.

Re: The Clash As an album London Calling still has the most repeat value for me. Although I have been playing the S/T quite a bit recently in S7.
Song wise Koka Kola, Bankrobber, Garageland, Clampdown have been my faves after all these years.

Re: The Clash I think what makes London Calling great is that while it may not have the Clash's best songs, it definitely has the best compilation of songs. That said, my faves are Death or Glory, Police & Thieves, and Bankrobber.

Re: The Clash I voted for the first album because it's the only one that represents what the Clash originally was in the punk scene and why they mattered. Sentimental, I know. The second album was good but bogged down by production by someone known for their Heavy Metal productions, for which that sound works better. It just doesn't have the spark it should have. London Calling is musically the best album, no question about it. Not a single bad song and even after all these years, I continue to get new meaning and ongoing pleasure from it. One of the best albums from the rock world, ever, but again I voted for the first one because that was "The Clash," not the historically aware internationally popular artsy meta-band they became so quickly. That worked beautifully for London Calling but after that there was an awful lot of indulgent nonsense. The way I see it now, the only really Clash-like song on "Sandanista" is "Police on my Back" even if several others are pretty good for what they are. "Combat Rock" is a great summer album. By that time there was no point in wringing hands over whether they were still punk or not, it's just a dang good, attractively weird record. It didn't get lost in dub like its predecessor. Plus you know you like "Rock the Casbah" even if you've heard it too much.
