Re: First Official Picture of the New DAIMAJIN!
Thanks for that! I missed NT: Live this month This looks cool and I can't wait to (hopefully) find and watch this. Seems like finding any Tokusatsu / Henshin (or whatever Daimajin falls under) is becoming more difficult rather than easier.

Re: First Official Picture of the New DAIMAJIN!
There are currently three good magazines in Japan, which you can order or subscribe to from your local Books Kinokuniya -- "Uchusen" (Hobby Japan), "Newtype The Live" (Kadokawa) and "Toei Hero Max" (Tatsumi).
In the Greater New York City Metropolitan area, you can find Books Kinokuniya at:
10 West 49th Street New York, NY 10020
There are also stores in West Nyack, New York and Edgewater, New Jersey.

oh, trust me, I know where they are In fact I have standing accounts with Asahiya need to get one for Books. They normally don't stock all of the mags, though which is a drag. The larger Kinokuniya by bryant park tends to lean more to fashion than anything. Thanks for the heads up on those others!

You're welcome!
You can special order any book or magazine -- or subscribe as well, so you never miss an issue! I've been ordering and subscribing through the San Francisco branch since 1979!
Cheers!

Re: First Official Picture of the New DAIMAJIN!
Tim Lucas, Video Watchdog (whatever THAT is) wrote: "There is so much writing in English on Japanese cinema that can't be accepted at face value — not because the writers are careless, but because the differences in culture and language are just too intricate. When I see August Ragone's name on a piece of writing, it gives me permission to place my faith in it completely. Among Japanese fantasy film historians, he's the best working in English." From this paragon of knowledge's blog: "The 289-foot Great Kannon in Kita-no-Miyato Park, Hokkaido. Any resemblance (to Daimajin) is strictly coincidental."I would hope so, as Kannon is a GURL.

Re: First Official Picture of the New DAIMAJIN!
EPIC FAIL!And the only exercise you get is "Jumping to Conclusions"? Ah, that photo caption was a joke... it's an (old) parody for the disclaimer "Any resemblance to actual persons living or dead is purely coincidental." I lived in Japan for five years in the 1980s, starting learning Japanese at 10 years old, and probably read more about Japan by the time I was 14, than most people do in a lifetime. I know that Kannon is a female -- Goddess of Mercy -- if you read my initial blog entry on the series, you'd know that: http://augustragone.blogspot.com/2009/0 ... n-new.htmlNote the fifth paragraph. Are you big enough to apologize? I would imagine not. (If you don't know who award-winning author Tim Lucas is, didn't you think of Googling it? Or clicking on my links?)

Haven't actually read this thread but just wanted to say that your book, August, is a must have.
Great design and very informative. I can't believe I waited so long to pick it up.
cheers.

Re: First Official Picture of the New DAIMAJIN!
Umm...I clearly missed something in this thread. But who cares: DAIMAJIN!!!
Thanks so much for the info, August.
I've a strong connection to the original Daimajin movies (I used to watch their English-dubs on "Creature Double Feature" Saturday mornings with my dad). I'm REALLY hoping this series doesn't suck...but modern day? I'm not getting my hopes up.
I just can't wrap my brain around a Daimajin production that's not a jidaigeki.
Anyway, thanks again, August. Oh, I must second the comments about your book. Fucking AWESOME. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm so glad I got it!

Thanks for the heads up! For the record, I fully expect this movie to be EPIC FAIL. Even more so if it's going to be made for TV. If the recent "Tetsujin", "Kitaro" and "Yokai Daisenso" outings are anything to go by it's going to be a steaming pile of festering monkey droppings, and the most fun you can expect to have will be spotting the number of product placements and members of JOHNNY'S JIMUSHO in the cast. Also, I can't see how I insulted you. If I wanted to do that I'd just come right out and call you ... oh, I don't know - an Attention Whore perhaps?
