 Re: Pizza
Whatever zpizza used to use that wasn't vegan was better, but on an easy to obtain premade pizza its about the only place I've found soy cheese.

Oh so it's like that? *throws down west coast sign* Kidding. Way I see it, people have STRONG preferences about different regionally-associated styles of pizza. My favorite is Italian, as in Italy, not Ital-American, but the only places in SF that have that style are relatively high-end, like A16. But yeah, soggy crust is a total drag no matter what the style. Can you get good *delivered* pizza in NYC? So far as I know, you can't here any more. North Beach used to be acceptable but no more. Haystack went down the tubes, so did Cybelle's at least 20 years ago. X-treme is like cartoon pizza. People like it but it's sort of it's own gross thing. Homemade from scratch is probably the best in the USA. You don't need a fancy wood stove in your back yard, but a pre-heated stone in the oven helps big time. Makes the house smell great and everyone will love you if you share.

 Re: Pizza
I often marvel at the fact that Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, or any other crap chain can stay in business and even turn a profit in NYC/NJ. I cannot understand why anyone, when faced with the dizzying array of Ray's (Famous, Original, or otherwise) and brickoven pizza places like Patsy's and Brooklyn's Brickoven, would possibly choose to eat that overprocessed doughy crap.

It's unfair how delicious cartoon pizza always looked. I'm stuck out in Massachusetts, far away from any NYC pizza 'rub off', but there IS a place with this amazing ultra-thin crust pizza that's fantastic, but totally unlike any pizza before it. It's about as thick as Motza, with minimalistic ally applied fresh ingredients, but there's no way to have it delivered, as it goes cold after about ten minutes.

 Re: Pizza
Best pizza in the Bay Area; always vegetarian (and I'm a pure bred carnivore, sorry Scott), only one pizza a day, line out the door, a few seats, but, most dining is al fresco, is the Cheese Board in Berkeley. You can also get a par baked full or half pizza at the Cheese Board Collective next store to take home, get a couple of cheese rolls while you're there best thing ever. http://cheeseboardcollective.coop/Pizza ... tive/z.htm

I've had mexican everywhere and NYC mexican is a nothing to talk about. In fact I will chalk up your sub-par knowledge of mexican to living in the land of pizza. Where is Joe Bunny?

There is virtually no decent Mexican food east of the Mississippi.

 Re: Pizza
To say that there's no good Mexican food in California doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Some of the most popular "Mexican" food is Californian in origin (and to be fair, some is Texan.) Mexican food is one of the world's great national cuisines, the real stuff is incredibly complex and unique. Best found in people's homes, though. As for that fancy-ized taqueria stuff, it seems Chicago's the place that gets it right. For the down-home version SF's Mission District still manages to rule. Funny thing about there not being good Mexican food in NYC until recently is that for years the best kitchens in NYC have been largely staffed by Mexicans. EDIT: See, that's how peace happens. Shots fired from the east, shots fired from the west, agreement found in the middle. Props to Rick Bayless.

Dean wrote: Funny thing about there not being good Mexican food in NYC until recently is that for years the best kitchens in NYC have been largely staffed by Mexicans. Thats the key thing about there being some good Mexican in brooklyn, the Mexican population here has been expanding at a very steady rate over the last few years. Sunset Park is the Mexican Food captial of NYC because its the mecca for the Mexican population here. I was shocked to see a taqueria ad in white bread park slope that was in spanish with lengua and sesos on the menu.

(As someone who has a astroboy/ultraman/robbytherobot/hamburger tattoo I feel this is relevant to the board.) been to taylor's... wine country is where it started, there are two in the area, it is not as amazing as people say, but it is REALLY good though, worth a try. the burger joint in new york was the best burger i've tried. in n out is still my favorite though, and tommy's a close second. personally, i'm not one for fufu burgers. my parents brought some tommy's chili this past month they came to visit. they're the best. if you ever go to sacramento or napa, squeeze inn has a pretty good burger. the cheese is what entices people. never heard of nopa! need to go.

http://www.7x7.com/blogs/bits-bites/200 ... raises-barIt really lives up to the hype. I hope that one day I run into Aida mollenkamp while i'm there and I talk her into sitting with me. Had my first tommy's burger on my last trip to LA and it was RIGHT FUCKING ON! I'm not really a chilliburger person but it made me a changed man. I hope to eat at least 3 when I go back.
