Geez, all the hits I loved as a youth back in Picksburgh!

I watched the first episode last night. What a crack up! I like how the show just takes liberties with reality in favor of style. Like the pirate flag on the spaceship flapping around in space. The animation is also charmingly un-slick. And what's up with the alien chick that's always drinking wine but doesn't have any obvious mouth?? Yes, good stuff.

Also, keep in mind that this show was produced 32 years ago (!) and was top-of-the-line television animation at the time (compare to its American contemporaries http://www.tvparty.com/sat78.html ). Just the level of storytelling and maturity of subject matter is light years beyond what we got here -- the story is based on Leiji Matsumoto's manga, so its a highly romanticized space opera. I mean, making animated series stick as close to reality as possible would be... boring. But, the style of the show does not sacrifice the writing or the characters -- and what about that great symphonic score?

Blakewest, no worries! Chad, during the 1960s and 1980s, children's programming was generally prime time, and on any evening of the week. For example, HARLOCK ran at 7pm on Tuesday nights from March 14, 1978 - February 13, 1979. The target demographic was, I believe, middle Grade School through High School Freshmen.
