NOTHING against Nag or the artists involved (I actually really like Joel's work) but the fact that the brand has mainly been defined by US artists makes it's presence in this thread something that I think is fair to discuss (and yes I would consider NagNagNag, Bemon et cetera brands, I can't see how they're not brands, they all have a pretty specific identity and they sell toys).

Gargamel has a boat load of stuff designed by Americans. Not just a few either, lots of their stuff, and not just paint schemes or colabs but sculpts and characters and everything. Should they move?

I actually buy all of my toys based on who the header art is by. That's really all I'm concerned with.

So there needs to be a constant flow of other sculpts to make 1 sculpt interesting? To pin the hype on the toy and maker isn't fair. Also I'd say there's lots of substance. You may not want to see it because of all the bullshit (I understand that) but I'd say it's not fair to write it off because of the hype. Put the hype aside, look at the toy, forget there's even an internet, just the figure. Who care's about the bullshit? Forget it. Just look at the toy, no preconceived notions, just a chunk of vinyl with paint. If you still aren't into it, then it's just the way it is. But to judge it based on idiots who pay $1500+ or on people complaining all the time isn't fair. If that's how things worked I'd hate the Star Wars original trilogy films. But I love them. I can look at them without thinking about the prequels and special editions and suckers who throw away constant cash at Lucas for horrible shit. It wouldn't be fair to them to judge them based on outside forces. Also, I'm not really viewing this as a "fight" really. I like talking about the toys. I know you've got a lot of passion for toys uber, so I do like talking about it. That's why I love this thread. Put aside all the "whoa man" and BS hype (that is created by the lovers and haters and faker ass hype mongers equally) there's a lot of real excitement and passion. Sure there are some things disguised as passion that aren't, but there is REAL excitement here too. What other thread has people jumping in who dislike the toy to go on and on about it more then the people who truly enjoy it?! The "haters" are the "creators" here! It's awesome!

also, totally turned off by the self-importance that emanates from this toy. of course that's just my jaded perspective, but does kanye own one yet? Luckily, the self-importance that emanates from you is still a total turn-on. Jesus, it didn't even take you 45 minutes to get to defending your boy. And it took you even less time to swoop in and snark.

uberboy wrote: What we know about Nag is that Nag likes to be mysterious and provocative. Nag likes to attach himself to popular hip young American artists and through them reach a broader non-Japanese audience and then to start doing exclusive lottery sales. "Made in Occupied Japan" indeed. Their Nagballs are boring. Because they are not really aiming to do "good" work, they are aiming to obliquely insert themselves in the hipster art world by attaching themselves to Mishka and Coop. Neither of which need Nagnagnag to be successful. I doubt it would have worked so well for them had both of them not helped out so early on. Or wait, it would have. Nag would have found somebody else. For the record, I sought out Shigeru and asked to work with him. I'm not even sure he knew who I was when I first contacted him.

Re: Angora Patio
I've said this before, but i saw photos of the genjin on Joel's flickr page, and asked about it, wanting to get one for my collection. When Joel told me the whole story, which included pointing me to this very thread ages ago, and said they were very difficult to get, I emailed Shigeru about possibly trading original art for a toy. He asked me to design packaging instead, and here we all are.
