Always start with a Bass, been to the original brewery on Trent, best Ale I ever had. Then a couple of Guinness, been to Dublin too, followed by a great IPA from America, Lagunitas. Have no idea where that is. Then a shot of pure sherry cask Glenmorangie, no ice. Then a fistfight for anyone standing. :) Fuckin great time! Who's in? We can trade toys and stories after. Seriously Bay Area Skull Krew, who's in? We can meet at Cinebar in San Jo or the the Irish Bank in Frisco. D-Lux I know your in. Anyone else?

Post Re: D-LuX Customs - Ruining your beloved toys since 2005
figured i'd take a few minutes to put my .02 cents into this discussion.

first off i somewhat like the black zag you did dlux... but i can be honest and say out of all the airbrush painted items i've seen you do... i've liked maybe a handful... im not trying to hate... but you post pretty decent pictures of them, and sometimes they seem so... half assed... now given this is my opinion, i hope you dont get offended by it... hell i've did less than 20 customs myself currently... but i can tell you that when it comes to masking, etc... i take time to get it done right... if i slip up and its not to my standards, i will tear it back down and start from scratch... it might be a loss in supplies, but its what i do. Sometimes when i look at your pics im like... man this coulda been good... but the masking is horrid.

I also sometime see other folks colorways they have been using, portrayed in your work after others have already did pieces in these colorways.

now don't take all this the wrong way, because i'm not trying to attack you... but many folks talk...

i've heard some folks wondering why you always have a sale going on in your webstore. so yeah you do sell alot, but you also start high and sometimes have to come down alot in order to get those items to sale. that rose thats currently up i believe was originally double your current asking price, if not higher.

I also know you like to try and have "defined styles" that are deemed yours. and you get mad when others would lets say use your color pallete.. I asked lee a year or 2 back to do a rebel custom and i wanted bright 80's colors... when it was revealed, i remember your response something along the lines of "its cool, but you know i'm the neon/80's color guy". something along those lines... I know you used it alot in your KR days... to be frank... i didnt care for it... you just did splats on all of that stuff, i remember your 20" custom... it basically was neon splats everywhere, with upside down kaws eyes.

i bet you think im coming down on you hard, and im sorry if that seems fit... but i dont feel you did bootleg these zags.

I agree gargamel does not own this "style" if you would put it... i personally would just call it a technique...

im not familiar on how to do it with an airbrush, but im sure most folks with practice could do it...

if the camo is basically copywritten to gargamel...

then shouldnt colorways to? should we not see hawaii painted zags, etc? but we do, and it's okay because its a homage?

we see skuletor customs etc... that is somewhat bootlegging? your putting a skulletor colorway on your companies sculpt, and profitting off of it... (not you dlux just speaking in general)

for the most part alot of this seems silly to be arguing about. did chanmen, kiyoka, and naoya all have there hands in on doing the zag sculpts? ( thats a real ? because i have no idea) and if not all of them did in fact sculpt it... then they too are bootleging if they are painting lets say (kiyoka was the sculpter) kiyokas work, and selling for a profit.

thereis a bunch of mixed emotions in here... i like some of dluxs' work, but at times i dont also. I dont feel he should be labeled as a bootlegger for these 2 customs though. or even a thief. he paid for the blanks, and did what he wanted with that said blank. (at some point gargamel did receive their cut for their sculpt). once that sculpt is in your hands you can do wahtever you want with it. eat it, paint it, shit in it. whatever.

the rage some are showing at dlux, is the same as most folks were showing to flippers on here... and im not talking blatent flippers, but i do know it did come in discussion before that some were mad that sculpts that did retail at lets say $100, were selling on the board 2 years later for $300... if im not mistaken SB's usual perspective of this, is that seems fair. I'm not going to lie, at sometimes you see alot of elitism in these boards... some board members its okay if they flip because of who they are... and then those said flippers that have the pass to do it... will call out another flipper, and be right in doing so.

Don't get me wrong, I love this board, its much more tightly woven then others i've been on. but there is some loose cannons on here.

those loose cannons sometimes take this little hobby of collecting plastic/vinyl toys that we like, a bit to seriously at times.
If your going to sit behind the screen, and always argue to another member about something... then where is the fun in that?

take it all in with a grain of salt dlux. some might like what you do, others might not... it might be a 50/50 split, or even a 90/10 split not in your favor... who cares... just do you, and fuck all the static.

i've said my peace.

Post Re: D-LuX Customs - Ruining your beloved toys since 2005
No offense taken whatsoever...

Yeah, my masking could aways be better, thats why I don't mask very often... I honestly hate doing it..lol I always assumed some liked my stuff, and some didn't, thats just going to be the way it is with anything... Oh yeah, my KR stuff was totally just kind of BS to me anyway. A few toys I liked, a few I didn't. A few people dug them, so I just kept making them. I do actually remember that comment to Leecifer.. I think it was around a time where we or others were having a "style" debate, and I was just messing around... I'm constantly trying to find my "thing". And I don't think I'll ever find it, so I'm moving on to bigger and better things ;)

Oh, as for my store... My roses ( for example) were always set at a specific price, as are my commission prices. As of late the buying of toys has slowed emensly so I priced them accordingly. if something sits around for a while, it's basically money I have tied up, and I'll sell it for 0 profit on my end, just to get my money back if I have to. I have since lowered prices throughout all the figures I do. Pricing is always the hardest part of anything you are trying to sell... Things are only worth what people are willing to pay. If 20 people used to immediately pay $100 for a custom rose, why sell them for $50. It's a hobby in that I actually like spending my time painting, but on the back end of that, I need to at VERY least make my money back. I create for myself, and more so collectors. Am I supposed to just keep every toy I paint for myself?? To me, it just seems a bit narcissistic and creepy to want to collect my own painted toys (not meant to offend people that do this). There is a large group of people who like custom toys, and they do want to, or can't paint them, themselves...

I don't see why people care if I paint toys and sell them. Sometimes it sounds like jealousy that out of like 300 toys I have only 2 in my store unsold. Or is it something more??? I honestly don't know why people care that I paint toys because I love to, and I sell toys to people that love them. Why shouldn't i have some type of compensation for my time, and effort.

By no means have I become rich making toys. occasionally it buys the groceries, or puts gas in my car. I was unemployed for nearly 2 years, and it helped out IMMENSELY, and help payed some of my tuition that got me into my new career in pediatrics...

This may be long winded, and seem defensive, but I can only tell you like it is from my side. I honestly didn't really think it was important enough to people to actually discuss with each other... I'm just another a-hole toy painter with an airbrush...

On that note, I hope you all enjoy your Saturday

this seems like it should never be an issue. There are some obvious color combo homages and everything or set color combos that companies have basically "owned" like TO but for anyone to call out a bite on "unowned" or "non-homage" colors seems crazy. They're colors, not technique or style. Maybe you may be known for using certain colors but it seems dumb to be known for a pallet rather than actual style which can have any color combo applied with it and have people say, "that's this dude" bwana and martin come to mind..

btw, all of the "you"s I've said are general.

While this is an excellent topic, that has seemed to bring up some valid points. Why don't we move it over here...

I really am enjoying your choice of colors on the Barabaran. Is the vinyl GID? If so does it glow thru the paint? Great work!

Yes, it is gid. I didn't check the glow through the color, but like the last 2 I did, they glowed a bit through the paint, so I'm assuming this one does. Yamo GID vinyl is a bit on the yellow side, so I had to use florescent yellow a bit heavier to get it to stand out...

I love this color pallet on gid vinyl!

That Barabaran from the Shooting Blanks is very yellow. It's really odd and doesn't glow as bright as the usual gid vinyl that's been made before. You shoulda painted the lady bug :P
