Wow, now that is an auction. Haven't really seen prices like that outside of YJA. I am no expert on these jumbos, but they do run into the steep end. I am guessing this guy is especially rare, given what he went for and his comparable condition. Obviously people know what they are doing though, cause there was no shortage of bids. Definitely a cool variant, I will have to enjoy the pictures though. :|

It's definitely a rare toy and of the most iconic character in the field, but what I think mostly drew the final bid was the fact that this was the first time this toy has been listed a public auction on a big stage properly listed so that the people who want it would see it. All that said, I'm still pretty surprised at the outcome. Thought it would be about half that. But I know the seller, he's a great guy and I'm very happy for him.

Part of the fascination is that it's a bootleg of the venerable Jumbo Machinder Mazinger Z. Granted, it's an extremely high quality boot and the use of yellow on the limbs is certainly striking. But, yeah, only a few known to exist...so not THAT surprised by the price (at least, it's the same order of magnitude I was expecting).

Isn’t it the fact that it’s a non-Asian (South American) bootleg that makes it worth more as well? Everyone knows about the Taiwan and Hong Kong stuff but I am always (ALWAYS!) shocked at how many more bootlegs are out there outside of Asia than I ever thought.

That's an interesting point. I'm not sure, though: from talking to Jumbo collectors--especially ones obsessed with boots--it just seems that rarity is the key factor (and beauty, of course, or lack thereof! :P ), not country of origin. For example, there are a bunch of boots from Korea that are as venerated as the yellow Mazinger (the yellow Golion, for example).

But I'm not totally sure. I mean, it seems like South America is "blowing up" with new discoveries. Maybe it's just that it's uncharted territory...and that's a naturally exciting thing!

Perhaps we should change the subject.

There are other items people may be after that are within the realm of affordability. And wouldn't want to arouse unwanted attention, would we? Let's talk in a few days.

id love to talk about some of the crazy bananas of the past couple weeks. i dont think mentioning the garada that was re-listed after not selling is stepping on anybody's toes at this point...

MMmmm Red Baron...

Never owned a talker so they're kinda intriguing to me.
I am guessing they still work after all these years though maybe its considered risky to actually pull the [snap] string...

talkers are great, but its a pretty deep dark well. the few i have play mostly fine, never had a problem pulling the strings. mostly they just sound really sped up when they play...

Damn, that Poseidon is mind-blowing! But you're right, Josh: talkers are almost like a whole other food group! :P

Wow Josh I've never even seen that Poseidon talker before. Looks almost identical to one Shikaruna made (they even did an event version in that same color). I love finding out when certain modern sculpts are based off older toys. I'm sure it happens pretty much all the time but since my vintage knowledge doesn't really go much further than a handful of companies I like to be surprised.

So did anyone actually win anything from this guy? I got destroyed on all of these, only won one of the four auctions I was bidding on. Its tough to compete with this OKU***** dude. Deep dark well for sure. Here are a few more that I was lusting over.

Funny how its the biggest activity on YJA in a while and no one is talking about it, at least not openly...
Saw that Lion Maru talker and the boxed set is sweet too.

Shigenobu Ohashi "S-Taiin Spaceman" released in 1997 (pre-Buta no Hana)

Better picture of it from the Shigenobu Ohashi exhibit held at Thrash Out in 2009.

Is that actually cheaper than it should have gone for? I think it would have been hard to find unless you searched "bullmark"

Hmm, excellent figure, but still a hefty price for a neo-kaiju in my mind. So which one of you guys dug deep for him? :D

Yeah, ~$1.2M for a C10 Voltes Jumbo is a typo. I wouldn't be shocked to see it break $10k though...given the Jumbo market these days...
