I definitely thought about doing that. But then isn't that the same thing as just ordering one for yourself?

Re: Grody Shogun - New Stuff
I don't collect Grody and everyone else seems to really want them. I'm in for this release because I know everyone else will be scrambling to get them. I hope the limit is 4 like other releases. Watch the bst for my big grody sale.
sincerely, squeaky

I am sure there are already folks scrambling to do this. I hope Luke and Amy have a slick way of weeding out the cheaters and permanently banning them from Gody sales.

Not sure if the seagool and dokugan collabs count. They're probably just going to comb through their sales emails and compare them to the new list they're making.

I know the times I missed out, It left an 'open' transaction on my lulu account. I imagine they'll use that to weed out people who have never attempted to score.

Re: Grody Shogun - New Stuff
Soooo, in the spirit of fueling further controversy, anyone knows -why- GS are so cheap? They seem to go through the same production, paint and distribution channels as other Japanese and made-in-Japan American companies, yet are half or a third of the price. Are Lulu losing money or are other companies making comparatively more?

Re: Grody Shogun - New Stuff
I don't think Lulu is losing money, but they're probably not making a whole lot. I've been guessing that they've been basically been charging cost on these guys. It's all part of Luke's philosophy about himself as an artist: Luke Rook wrote: This is my apprenticeship, I take it very seriously. My masters are all around me. I honor them in my work. I begin humble and my pricing will reflect that. As I grow and my skills sharpen I will to charge what the those before me charge. This is my bowing to you, the toy fan, the oddball, the lover of randomness, the collector. I work within this rich community of craftsmen and artisans. This living bivouac nourishes me gives me the strength to go on. I am grateful for this opportunity to connect with the living past and the vibrant present.

Are Lulu losing money or are other companies making comparatively more? Well Luke acts as his own producer, so he doesn't have to pay a producer, American makers can't communicate with the factory so we have a producer fee. He also does his own wax, which is really the most expensive part of production, and is able to make multiple wax masters and sculpt into them, creating a quick effective way to do a large number of parts and variations free of silicone molding cost. It really is some next level shit after seeing it I was kind of like, why didn't anyone else think of doing that? Really, Luke is pumping out a crazy amount of figures, hundreds a week he said on twitter. He's making money. He's not making as much per figure, but he's selling such a large quantity, his model is lower price higher quantity, where as most vinyl companies are higher price lower quantity. It would really be difficult for an American producer to imitate because. A. Producer fees, and additional production costs like wax masters. B. Without dealing directly with the factory I think it would be difficult to just keep ordering hundreds of figures back to back having them shipped over. C. Most of us have a full time job, unless you're making toys full time, you just don't have the time to release that kind of quantity. Again that's just me comparing it to us American makers. The Japanese makers can obviously deal with the factory and don't need an agent, but if you don't do your own wax, you have to use the factory's wax expert, The factory wax is very, very expensive. My jaw dropped when I heard what they wanted for the Cadaver Kid.

Re: Grody Shogun - New Stuff
Are you guys forgetting run size? 200 monsters on the first drop, I'm sure they are doing fine money wise. Not to mention that the reusing of parts on subsequent toys makes mold costs go down faster.

People with no sense of toy karma! How could you even display such an ill gotten prize? I'd have no problem seeing this run move around some after awhile, but what would a scheming bastard even be able to with his new Tell-Tale Monster? Is there any precedent for this kind of offer in the sofubi world? Strikes me as a pretty commendable recognition of people's enthusiasm for his new venture, and without seeming at all like a cynical response to threadbare criticisms that have been levied against him here and perhaps elsewhere.

Designer vinyl collectors have no problem showing off their hoarding, or trade flipping gifts, or many other pretty shitty acts. The offer by Luke is awesome, and I hope he has a plan to keep it kosher... I just can't wait to see the first one on ebay from someone who hasn't scored, but saw how much buzz these toys have.

I'm sure you're right, and that's unfortunate. I'd just hope those of us around here would steer clear of such shitnanigans, and I guess that's what I was addressing in my comment.
Looking forward to the first photos so I can sit back and be comfortably jealous.

Re: Grody Shogun - New Stuff
Rather than focus on would be cheaters I would just like to commend Luke for this approach. Regardless of how assclowns treat the offer, I think it's a wonderful gesture. Truly a refreshing break from seeing the same people win random lotteries. I have nothing against NAGx3 or those that actually scored and would love to have one. It is sad though that although many try every lottery and still have never won there hasn't been a single large run to help them out. Even the unpainted blanks get sold in crazy small numbers. I still really want one but it's hard to maintain enthusiasm and it will remain low if/until I can actually hold one of my own. Sure the hunt is fun but becomes less so when it's being made difficult to maintain exclusivity. So many people act like large run numbers will just make people disinterested but I hope they notice that even flooding the market doesn't stop a cool toy from being appreciated. 200 is a crazy large run compared to many of the toys on my shelves but try putting up a wanted thread for one and you don't even get inflated price fishing offers. I think it's obvious that Luke is trying to get his toys into peoples hands where that can be appreciated and played with but has kept up the collectability with separating them into runs and releases. Maybe in the end it will result in them being plentiful on the bst and all the hype will die off but I hope not. This line really seems to care about the fans and I hope they care in return. Or I am gullible...
edit: This isn't to say others don't care about their fans, it's just nice to see this philosophy in action. Several small run makers come to mind who still find ways to do awesome stuff for the supporters.
