Post Ultraman on Hulu
I used the search feature to see if this was already brought up on SB but I don't think so...

Just a heads up I just noticed they have 38 episodes of english dubbed Ultraman on Hulu. They also have the not so great Ulraman: Towards The Future. Meh... Would have preferred Ultra Q.

Get your Tsuburaya on!

Very cool, that'll probably introduce lots of Westerners who didn't grow up with the series on TV to Ultraman. I strongly prefer the series in Japanese w/subtitles but the dubbed series is the one I loved as a kid.

The dubbing on the series is really topnotch. I'll admit a nostalgic fondness for it and nearly all of the other original API produced English dubs of the day, but with Ultraman in particular I wouldn't hesitate at all to recommend the US issue to the uninitiated.

[wearing grumpypants because, really, I never remove them] So I guess I will be the odd man out and say that I don't like dubbing of any kind when the original is available. Short of small segments of films I have no intention of watching of to make fun of, I don't see the point. I am still happy Hulu is showing something to new audiences, but in this case, where the license for North America has already been obtained, and the serial has been digitised, it seems to make even less sense.

But it is Tsuburaya, so in that way I cannot fault it.

Son of a bee. I would have loved for this to have cone on Netflix. I've personally never had the privilege of watching the original Japanese series. I only grew up with the English dubbed versions. I'm very back and forth when it comes to the original language and dubs. This mainly applies to anime. Dragonball Z and Samuria Champloo have great English casts, but the original Japanese voice cast kinda detracts from the slapstick humor I see. But I don't like anything live action with English voice casts, with the exception of Ultraman and Godzilla, since I never owned or watched the originals growing up.

Post Re: Ultraman on Hulu
are you kidding? DBZ and samurai champloo blow balls dubbed.

Im sorry, but American dubbing altogether blows and hard. Crappy voice acting and lame censoring really makes for some subpar anime, and thats all I remember from back in the day with these. Im glad I had language options, lol.

I do agree with you, man. This would have been much cooler for me on Netflix. :P

If you hunt around you can probably still find the DVDs of the first two seasons on the cheap. They come with both the JP and ENG versions ... the first edition included an interview with the people who did the dubs. Might be fun to contrast and compare. As I recall what people say in the English dubs often varies substantially from what the subtitles say in the Japanese versions.

Wait, are we talking about Ultraman again now? If so, then yeah, the DVD versions now cost next to nothing (which is heartbreaking when I think what I had to pay for my complete set). I would highly recommend any fans grab those instead. I don't know what the streaming is like but I cannot see these not being worth it.

weren't you guys saying not to pick up the new (cheap) dvd sets due to their terrible compression and lack of extras? or was that related to some other re-release?

Amazon has the complete series on DVD for a little over $8 plus shipping. And these a few used record places that have it for around the same price, as well. But I have hears the audio and visual quality sucks really bad on them. Which doesn't seem to far off for how low the cost is.

No, that was for the Iron King and Mach Baron dvd sets. Both of those were re-released in compressed versions from Mill Creek, and the better, earlier ones are from BCI Eclipse. BCI also did the Ultraman sets, so there should be no problems there.

Hmmm, I just checked, and yeah, Mill Creek did also make the Ultraman ones, at least that is what it says for the ones on Amazon right now. I can't speak for the quality of those, since I have BCI discs, but I would be wary. It looks like once again they compressed the stuff from six discs onto just four - lame. But really, 8$ for the entire series? You can't complain about that. (I think I paid 65$ plus shipping for reference :| ).
