this is exactly what i've been thinking :( profound sadness

I think at the core of his inability to get At the Mountains of Madness made, which I would love to see happen, is what plagues most Hollywood movies these days; massive budgets, which equal massive expectations of financial success for the studios.

GDT wanted 150 million to make Mountains of Madness, and even with Tom Cruise as the lead to help attract audiences, HPL is not mainstream. Sure, it can be a great film without audiences needing to know it's an HPL novella, but studios want more assurances these days for that kind of budget. For Pacific Rim, the studio can bank on shit-loads of licensing deals for merchandise before the film is even shot so they can make up some of the budget. Hey, I'd love to see Lego sets of "The Elder Things" and the Antartic city but that level of licensing wouldn't happen with Mountains of Madness. ; )

District 9's Neill Blomkamp had a budget of $30 million and it looked incredible AND made huge profits.
I have to believe GDT can drastically bring his budget down if he really wants to make Mountains of madness.
He's worked with shoestring budgets in the past to get the movies he really wants to make made, I'm sure he can do it again.

I had no idea Guillermo Del Toro was asking 150 million for "Mountains of Madness" or that Tom Cruise was attached to the project. It seems like a story you could do for far less and that probably help make it more true to the book(Good point about District 9 Ralph). I was disappointed when the film was canned but would rather wait for a Tom Cruise free version.

Back to Pacific Rim...My girlfriend and I saw it last week and had a blast. We both went in expecting a Giant Monsters Vs. Huge Robots and the film delivered just that. We both would like a sequel to happen but if this is all we get that's fine.

Saw it this weekend and it's just another movie to support my opinion that GdT is vastly over-rated.

Me too ! And judging from the overseas box office, it will happen. China gave it the highest grossing WB single day box office at 9 mil, and its done over $140 mil as of last weekend overseas, plus $80 mil domestic = sequel :D

They've already discussed a sequel. The humans use the drift to tap deeper into the minds of kaiju and use them as weapons against other kaiju. Supposedly, of course.

I really liked Pacific Rim.
Anybody go out and by the NECA toys?
I'm looking forward to the 18" Gypsy Danger.
I wonder how many Jaegers and Kaiju they will produce.
So far there is Series 1 and 2.
