Re: Black Metal
Just off the top of my head here are some bands that still make black metal more than relevant. To be honest I enjoy most of these bands more than the classic's.

Re: Black Metal
For me, I felt things fell off after the 90s. I think Panzer Division Marduk was the last new BM album I purchased around then. Between 2000-2010 or so I was convinced there wasn't anything much worth checking out. I'd have to say though that there is a lot of exciting and challenging things happening these days. Lots of crap of course.
I've said it before, but I'm a big Sutekh Hexen fan and I can't say there is any classic release that punches you in the face quite as hard as those early tapes they did.
Stuff on Rhinocervs and other labels like that seem worth paying attention to.
Its great if you still get enjoyment from those bands.
That's harsh You oughta give em Antaeus and Primordial !

Agreed, and its always been that way. I would submit that if bands just kept cranking out 1994 Darkthrone/Marduk etc. we'd all be bitching about how everything sounds the same.

The new Summoning record has been on constantly, I dig it so much! I even love the eagle noises synched up with the music. Pass the mic to an eagle!
Right there with you on the new Summoning. I listen to the vinyl at home, and it's dominating the ipod rotation. I also love the howling wolves in the mix
Hard to believe this is from 1987 ! Unfortunately - I don't have this cd. Hope it see the day again when they release their first proper album this summer.

Re: Black Metal
^ What'd you think after another listen, Jason ? I listened to it again today.....still came away underwhelmed, but it has some good moments too....I think 'All That May Bleed' is a good track, but the Decibel flexi from a couple months back of GG Allin's 'Fuck Off, We Murder' slays everything on the new album
I picked it up the other day and have given it a couple of spins. So far it's too early for me to give an opinion other than I am not impressed with the quieter moments. I was also surprised to see them use lyrics from NMA as part of their advertising / promotion of the album.

Bummed to hear that Altar Of Plagues is calling it quits after their show in Poland on Oct. 19th, at the Unsound Fest. Always thought they were one of the better 'new school' black metal bands.

If you like Decibel then you should grab it. If not for an amusing read... Is this a new issue or an old item anyway? They don't send me copies any longer since I don't send them review materials.
Got Behemoth's The Satanist a couple weeks ago - I think they can be considered as Black Metal again (kind of anyway..) Cool ambiances and awesome technique, similar to Triptykon in some ways. Their best album since Pandemonic Incantations - recommended !
