It'd been a few years since I'd visited the KR Forum but having done so this week was interesting ... lots of unfamiliar names, but lots of the same old behavior. One thing that sort of cracks me up is the way that folks there seem to think they can bully or whine or shame the business into doing what they as individuals want.

Surprise! this was done on Skullbrain plenty as well. Not just towards Super7 but towards just about everyone from 2007-2012ish

That KR thread answered a couple of questions and covered things like price increases for licensed products. Was that the news that you were referring to?

It was definitely irritating to read that's for sure!

Also, an no offense at all, but what questions were answered? All they said was they were hiking prices.

The news I was referring to has changed a little bit. I wish I could blow the top off of it but it's not my place. Let's just say that it's not business as usual for them. Look for a VARIETY of products being sold at the SF store soon though. Goodbye to LA,NY and wherever else they had stores.

Ok so I'm not at work now & I can answer your question properly.. The main discussion was about the price increase which looks like it will be 20% for licensed figures. Apparently these series have gone from $10 to $12 recently: Futurama S2, Marvel Labbit, Wandering Misfits, Simpsons S2/THOH, Street Fighter.

I guess that's fair enough because I'm sure most companies are raising their licensing fees annually or with each new series. If the previous set were successful enough to warrant a new series then I guess the suits would realize that they could ask KR for more money. Pretty shitty but that's how the world works.

Turns out KR are looking at packaging more figure series with window packaging, eliminating the blind box format. Maybe that would spike sales in the short term for people who don't "get" blind box purchases.. Definitely a lot of the casual customers and walk-ins would appreciate being able to see what they buy. I know at work (I'm in a big bookstore chain) we introduced some of the Marvel, Simpsons KR stuff and even after explaining to people that they are just like buying trading cards etc. they are hesitant to buy something where they can't see which character is in there. And most of these people have never bought them before so I don't see why they care so much.. It's not as if they would be getting doubles. Thankfully you get people coming in maybe once every few days who get it and are excited by the blind box concept,, and if you're lucky they appreciate vinyl toy culture.

The last bit of news that I picked up from the thread was that there is a plan laid out for a new KR store in NYC roughly 18 months from now. I guess that makes sense if it sounds like they are redefining what kinds of stock they will be carrying in their stores. Sounds like it's a period of transition and re-branding for these guys.

Still confused as to why is this discussion even relevant on Skullbrain?

If you're so OCD for information, maybe you should post on the KR forum and join all in the inane fanboy diatribe!

Nah the people there annoy me after looking at that thread.. I'll end up turning into the Scary Andy of the KR forums and that would just be horrible for everybody!

I can act cool and neglect the fact that I own a couple of KR toys and only claim that I've been into hardcore sofubi forever, but like many people here buying KR was part of the growing process from buying TMNT at Target to collecting the hand crafted toys that we love today. I don't touch KR these days but I am intrigued about what's going on because like it or not this story is relevant to our interests.

People are complaining about re-selling doubles, the value of toys being ruined in the future etc over at the KR forums so I'm not even going to bother talking about business over there. It's being discussed here because we can actually talk about the real issues behind these closures and have an intelligent discussion about it at Skullbrain.

If that was the case this thread should have been stomped on 5 pages/30 days ago...

Back to constructive discussion!!

I couldn't help but think of this thread when I saw this post
http://www.spankystokes.com/2014/06/funko-super7-give-nightmare-before.html
I'm not supporting or condemning either S7 or KR, I'm just saying, these companies do what they have to do to survive.

I realized a few days ago that Budnitz is the guy behind Ello, which is already panned as a disaster... Would explain why he is devoting a lot less time (and money) to KR.

People keep saying its a disaster because of the venture capital thing, but i think its still better to get away from facebook until the next thing is made.
I doubt their will ever be a perfect social network.

I think Paul left KR several years ago.. I can't remember exactly when but the flood of licensed products started after he left.

He changed his role, but he didn't leave. I mean, their HQ left for Boulder partly because he moved there, and the Simpsons series started in what, 2008, 9?

Ah! I mean I credit the guy for wanting to do stuff, but Ello is his what, 10th company in 10 different fields? Concentrate on something and do it well, maybe?

Well, something like that (s7 advertising on kr) was the source of the Luke / Brian confrontation some time back. Something that was expunged from sb...

When Paul moved the company to Boulder, he parted ways with KR within the first year of the move. I believe he left in 2009/2010..

It's my understanding that there are a lot of things that magically get expunged from the boards relating to S7

I think what separates the old guard here from the nubs comes down to a single question: what happened to Alice?
