What a nice duo to have arrive in the mail Rei, I am very jealous of both. I actually think they go well together. So excited and genuinely happy to see excellent brainers get their due representation and respect for this outstanding work. Myself excluded, we sure have a talented crowd here. Love those two guys, enjoy them Rei!

Ok, I can't seem to get this toy out of my head. Really interesting to look at. I just remembered why it has me befuddled. It reminded me of a Doctor Who episode (w/Tom Baker), "The Seeds Of DOOM!", where explorers uncovered a mystery pod. One touch and you become infected, and the parasitic life form starts to engulf your body, turning you into an Alien plant being! You become super-sized with a crazed predilection for wanting to destroy humans and buildings...

A million zillion THANK YOUs and lots of hugs Patrick! :P :D :P
A very sweet pair arrived in the mail to greet me after a long week. Instead of one Zollemedear, I was greeted by a daisy-capped chick as well! Thank you for making this gal so completely happy! :D

Two tiny, but oh so lovable, toys, Grace. Congratulations! (and thanks Patrick!) I quite look forward to getting some of those AA minis in hand someday too.

This beefy, bulbous big boy arrived Saturday. More than a pound and a half -- Sofubi With Substance!

I love him, and his glow is powerful indeed. Now that I have him in hand I like the googly-eyes, but I do wonder why this (US Toys) Kanegon omits the zipper/teeth detail from the coin purse's mouth?

Fantastic toy!! What a great landing (and I have to say, I really like the backdrop too). Congratulations on bringing that hefty fella home. :)

I wonder about the zipper too, though a number of toys do omit it. The slightly different version of him that appeared in Redman had teeth in lieu of the zipper, but still pretty much looked the same.

Personally, I prefer the way he looks without I think, particularly for the 'smoother' interpretations that the soft vinyl toys generally are, but I can completely understand why some fans would love to see him with it, for accuracy to character. Still a wonderful figure, so consider me jealous.

Thanks! The backdrop is a tray I made -- This parquetry technique is called, of all unlikely things, "diaperwork." As I understand it, this is an English bastardization of the French "d'Ypres" work, like cloth "de Nimes" became "denim."

OK, woodworking/etymology tangent ends, back to vinyl!

Beautiful Kanegon! Congratulations Miami! Perhaps you'll favor us with a glowie pic? That tray is amazing! Thanks for the description of the parquetry pattern. May I ask what type of woods you used? Great toy and woodwork :D

Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread

That is amazing work Miami. I figured it was a tray, but am so impressed that it is your own work; I definitely thought it was vintage (and was pretty jealous!, the table looks like it would be right up my alley too). So do you offer any of your woodwork for sale too [nudge, nudge], or is it just as a hobby for yourself? :P

You know, even though I lived right there, I had no idea about the derivation from serge de Nîmes. Brilliant, thank you! I have a weakness for etymology, and definitely appreciate learning something new any day of the week.

Thanks for all the kind comments! I'll post a glowie Kanegon pic later tonight.

The Qbert/diaperwork tray, IIRC, is white oak, CA black walnut, and some flavor of pseudo mahogany. ("Philippine" mahogany, "Honduran" mahogany, etc. are not true mahogany, which is Swietenia Mahagoni, aka Cuban Mahogany. The real thing is now 'commercially extinct,' the British Navy pretty much scooped up every last bit of it - along with all the lignum vitae, ironwood, leadwood, etc. - throughout the Caribbean in the 17th & 18th centuries.)

I'm really not much of a woodworker, there are so many people who do truly jaw-dropping work. I've never tried to sell any, I work far too slowly! (For some of the best marquetry ever, google image search for Silas Kopf, & for epically-superhuman woodcarvings, look at Grinling Gibbons.). If anyone would ever like to try their hand at woodworking, I can highly, highly recommend the summer classes offered at the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking program in NorCal (Ft. Bragg, CA). They offer summer woodworking classes ranging from a few days to a few weeks (as well as their full 1-2 year program during the school year). Plus, it's heaven there in summer - Ft. Bragg never gets above 75 degrees all summer long (compared to Congo-esque summers in Miami, which are like 6 months of living in a dog's mouth).

At the risk of following this tangent too far, here's part of an old post showing a couple of my other woodworking projects -- I have no idea what insanity drove me to attempt a two-legged chair!

miami wrote:I'm also a woodworker, here are a couple of recent pieces I made ... One's a Nakashima 'homage' (aka shameless, blatant copy) Conoid chair, the other's just a little tool tote/rack that I use to keep the 'current-usage' tools from getting lost in the sawdust ... both came from one nice slab of CA black walnut.

BTW, Grace, your Kai-Zine Issue #3 is going out to you in today's mail - If/when I find the other issues, I'll send them along.

I do not see any copyright notices anywhere in this one, but it may well look like something other than ©, in Japanese. I hope someone is able to scan and post all the contents of these ... Maybe even translate the articles, for the unworthy Japanese-illiterate among us? I know I'd love to be able to read the interview in this #3.

Don't Worry, Be Earthly.
New Earthly vinyl toy from LeeeeeeToy. Comes with male and female head attachments. A leaf or flower that pegs into the crotch area. The arms articulate just below the shoulder muscle. All packaged in a pretty cool graphic box. One of the most fun toys I have gotten in a while.
