 I think I did too. That was great! I scared the hell out of my chihuahua.

Yup. It almost seemed like Sonnen was going for broke at the end there. :?: All he had to do was lay in Siva's guard and land some more hammerfists til the bell. He got too careless at the end. I couldn't believe the fight ended like that. Still- I think it's great that Sonnen paved the way for other fighters. Showing that maybe Silva is not all he's made out to be. Very beatable.

4 for 5 in my picks... I gve Alves to much credit for a 12 month rest... Silva didn't look tired or even anywhere near as hurt as Sonnen... He landed the triangle and showed he was the better fighter, even when vulnerable... I'm sure there will be a rematch, but for now silva is still undisputed, and you have to respect that.

I'm glad Silva was able to pull it off at the end. I hate when wrestlers win by doing nothing but scoring takedowns and then doing just enough to keep from being stood back up.

As a fan, I find it frustrating to watch. Plus, Sonnen wasn't really delivering any effective ground and pound. Heck, he looked more banged up than Silva at the end. He scored some good takedowns but then just maintained top position and smothered Silva, and all the excitement. Lame.

Sonnen was being pretty effective with his striking on his feet, so it was even more frustrating that he almost ground out such a dull win by decision.

If Sonnen had been able to force a stoppage due to ground and pound, it would have been an amazing victory. But, as it was, it just seemed like an incredible opportunity wasted.

yeah, but Silva IS all he's made out to be, right? he's been champion forever. that's from beating asses--no one gave it to him...and ppl have been trying their damnedest to take it from him. beatable...but not very!

But I see what you're saying. I think whatever Sonnen was doing to take Silva down so easily, Silva learned from it and it'll be risky business trying to pull that stuff again.

Sonnen had the fight WON! I have no idea why in the final round he decided to sit back. That is the only reason he was caught in the arm bar. For four and a half rounds he had all his weight on top of Silva. WHY THE FUCK DID HE SIT BACK?????
I would almost say fix, but I don't think anyone would let themselves get hit in the face for four and a half rounds for a fix.

Triangle, armbar whatever the fuck! He shouldn't have been caught. He looked worse because he's white!! He took a nice elbow from the top position, but overall he was winning the fight. Yes, I'm upset. I wasn't a Sonnen fan, but I was rooting for him.

The fight I saw was silva getting beat up for 4 1/2 rounds. How bad a guy looks really doesn't say much considering all the scar tissue these guys have, a mere elbow can make you look like a bloody nightmare. I agree that the sitting back at the end was a huge error. Overall, I cant remember the last time I watched a UFC fight and actually though wow! that was a great fight, and finally that was a great fucking fight. I was about to give up on watching them anymore.

Not really. I'm not saying he isn't a great fighter and a champion. But, I agree with Sonnen saying that he is given too much respect. Opponents practically hand him the fight by playing his game and being too cautious from the get go. I would love to see him fight GSP now. See who the best really is.
As far as Sonnen's ground and pound goes- it was pretty damn good for the first 2- 2 1/2 rounds. And he had Siva hurt several times on the ground and on the feet. So you can't say Silva did all the damage. Sonnen was cut by that elbow. But Silva's face didn't look too great heading back to the locker room either. To me, he didn't look very happy at all leaving the ring. Seems the aura of invincibility may be broken.

Exactly, every opponent I have seen fight him in the UFC were too timid to just jump in the fire and take shots and risks which is exactly what Sonnen did. I got the feeling he has been sitting back watching all of these fights frustrated that no one was trying to get in there and hurt silva, and he finally got his chance.

Dana did say afterwards that Silva went to the hospital, i mean evidence of blood or not he took beatings the whole time.

He had cracked ribs from training going into the fight.

Sonnen definately kept control, but that's it. He never did anything decisive to win. It's like when a striker has an opponenet outclassed but just holds him off and dances the last couple of rounds.

He's a top wrestler. He can score a takedown and then smother and maintain top position, but I can't respect that if that's all he does. He had plenty of opportunities to sieze the title from the Champ and end the fight decisively. He couldn't close the deal, he got sloppy and he got caught.

You have to take the title from a Champion. You can't just eek out a lame decision.

Sonnen knocked Silva down twice with is stand up.He also took some good shots that sent him reeling so taking silva down seems like the obvious progression of the fight. Its not like sonnen JUST sat on Silva and thats all tha happened. Silva was trying triangle chokes , arm bars and Kimuras from the bottom so SOnnen was on the defense even from the top, and obviously ended up losing because of it. Anyway, my point is up until the point of the Choke/arm bar Sonnen was DECISIVELY winning and to say otherwise I think is a major discredit to both fighters. Anderson got Beat up for the most of 4.5 rounds but proved that he is the champ by overcoming that and finishing the fight.

I agree that Sonnen was definately winning the fight, I just would have hated to see him win the title like that. He was holding top position and defending but didn't make any significant submission attempts of his own and didn't/couldn't pull off an impressive ground and pound stoppage.

He was being very effective on his feet and was handling Silva's power pretty well, so I was disappointed that they didn't trade more on their feet.

My only point was that in a championship fight, I like to see a decisive win. A KO, a ref. stoppage or a submission.

A decision win is a let down, especially if it's a decision where a wrestler rides top position and smothers, or a striker gets on his bike and rides an early advantage until the clock runs out.

I'd like to see a rematch and see how they adjust to eachother's styles.

im actually thinking that Sonnen might be able to secure a immediate Rematch with Silva... don't quote me on that... but witht he circumstances, he very well might get a second shot right away, and not have to stand in line again... point is at the end of the night... Silva won, and all those words Sonnen was speaking, obviously were just him Huffing if he left without Silva's belt.

Sonnen got a $60k bonus as well. Well deserved, counting nearly 300 hits on Silva.

    yeah, but:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO6ZcM7VDaU

there's a reason for all the caution. I don't think Silva is unbeatable, but I think he's earned his reputation. definitely. But I guess after a while of easy-wins and people generally being afraid to go at you, then you're not ready for guys like Sonnen and an ass-beating is in order. I think it's great that a fighter like Sonnen came in and really gave Silva a rude awakening. now we'll see an even hungrier Silva (or we'll see more ass-whoopings until the belt is finally taken from him and he retires).

I can understand him not being up for the first fight and fighting the way he did. Frankie didn't trash talk him, but this time around BJ was pissed the way Frankie was carried around the octagon after the first fight and the fact that Frankie didn't want to give BJ a rematch, etc.....I just don't understand his game plan?? BJ was a BEAST against Sanchez and Florian.
