many products sold here are powdered pigments. I'll add them to paint transparent bought in factory paint for vinyl. special effects! http://www.teknofiniture.it/template.php?pag=12862&id_cat=1065&id_sotto_cat=2387
So I painted a clear Smogun last night with V-Color, all went well until I wanted to give the flat pink and orange a bit of clear coat to give it a shine. Once I sprayed the clear my clear vinyl got frosty. WTF did I do wrong? This is the first time I've ever actually painted on clear vinyl and did really expect this problem. So what do you guys use to clear coat your customs over VC. Here's a pic
Thanks for the help, that's probably the problem. I didn't know they had a matte clear but that makes sense. I had a list of what all the color numbers on the bottles meant but I lost the list a while back when my hard drive died so I have no way of checking if it's matte clear. Anyone still have the VC color numbers?
There can be a few reasons why that happened. Do you paint in a colder moister area ? Try this, keep a hair dryer near by, warm up the vinyl just a tad. Then spray, the immediately dry again. You can try this on the cloudy vinyl and it might fix that right away. Or maybe you thinned it to much. Or possibly you may have gotten something in the cup like a lubricant ? But the dryer may work. I have had this problem before.
Awesome, I'll give it a try. Any other clear coat that you guys recommend? I don't have much and will likely need more soon. Will MK clear work over VC?
I think it's safe to use any clear coat that is made for soft vinyl. The only difference is that some paints have different solvent points and this has the potential to cause an issue. V-Color has a high solvent point though so most any will go over it with out negative effect. I would guess you used the mat clear as well. #23 is clear #24 is flat base. the only other thing I can think of is if you used #23 but didn't thin it enough. If that is the case, you should still be able to clear coat it again and have it come out OK.
V-Color number list: 01 WHITE 02 BLACK 03 RED 04 BLUE 05 LEMON YELLOW 06 GREEN 07 BROWN 08 SILVER 09 GOLD 10 FLAT WHITE 11 FLAT BLACK 12 BRIGHT RED 13 SKYBLUE 14 FLESH A 15 FLESH B 16 IVORY 17 ORANGE YELLOW 18 EMERALD GREEN 19 LIGHT BROWN 20 LIGHT GRAY 21 MONSTER BLUE 22 MONSTER GREEN 23 CLEAR 24 FLAT BASE 25 RETARDER 26 CLEAR RED 27 CLEAR BLUE 28 CLEAR YELLOW 29 CLEAR ORANGE 30 CLEAR GEEN 31 SMOKE 32 FLUORESCENT RED 33 FLUORESCENT YELLOW 34 FLUORESCENT ORANGE 35 FLUORESCENT PINK 36 FLUORESCENT GREEN 37 FLUORESCENT PURPLE
In this instance, I think the "frosted" clear really works well with the colors you picked. Kind of a happy accident. V-color clear is a little tricky but very nice when you get it to work for you. Still, most of the time I prefer to use Future: It's cheap, easy to find, dries quick, and isn't sticky. Sprays through the airbrush no-problem. It's an acrylic clear coat and modelers have been using it for years to finish their pieces. It's self-levelling so if you sometimes take a brush to your customs (which I do) it's great for filling/concealing any brush strokes.
HOLY F'N A that Pledge trick is AMAZING!!!! Check the before and after shot, and that's just one coat of the Pledge. Took away all of the frosted look. THANKS DUSTIN!!!! before after
BA-ZING! damn... that's an amazing little trick there! just... wow. (and it looks great, by the way!)
for future reference, MK clear works great over vcolor, and on clear vinyl. Also Krylon Crystal works great too... Only can clear I used back in the day, and it never got tacky or cloudy... I was never a fan of the v-color thinner
I didn't see anything in the thread but I might have overlooked so... I finally ran out of VC thinner and still have 9 bottles to mix, so do I use plain paint thinner or lacquer thinner or ...?
I just want to chime in here with a caveat about MK clear coat- D-Lux is right it'll work over V-color, but MK clear kinda becomes a hard shell if you will after it cures. And once you spray MK clear, if you want to strip the figure again (like you're not happy with the colors or notice a flaw or something) acetone becomes ineffective. And I've encountered MK clear (and the underlying colors) actually separating from the base vinyl at spots... usually around joints and points of friction; where the aforementioned shell peels away like a skin. And finally, It actually changes the feel of the vinyl when its done... makes it hard and takes away (for me anyway) an important part of the vinyl toy experience. For some, these things are not a problem, for me it's the reason I choose not to use Monster Kolor when I spray.
If you do use monster kolor, disassemble the toy this will reduce the chances of joints locking up. The clear does get very hard tho. Since it's a 2 part it's almost like a spray resin. But from experience it does chip or rub off easier than v-color when clear is not used.
