It's not always the sculpt's fault...

@MisterYuck Oh, damn! That’s surprising to hear! I have eight or nine Draculazer toys that are produced by Gums, and the quality is outstanding. As a maker, I’d have to say I’d be rather perturbed by the idea of production costs being higher than Japan, as well. Hopefully there’s something that can be done about improving the quality of pulls!

GUMS approached Drac and asked to produce his stuff, so that would probably play a part in quality control.

There are some good discussions about the line there. Ooh, you funky Funko.

I for one do think that Godzilla sculpt belongs in this thread. There are some visually appealing sculpts to the hikari line, but this design really irks me.

The color’s nice tho (my positive comment).
Do you have any of the finger puppets, Robert? No complaint about the quality, but an observation- they have a very different feel than the full size guys. It’s a much stiffer plastic. I would like them just as much if they were softer, but I’ve been curious about the material ever since first handling them.

I’m totally ok with moving on from racist toys, to rotting zombie dick toys.

I’ll say one last thing about it though... A post is gone. ;) Better than nothing.

Gums produces several different hardnesses (sp.?) of vinyl. The first run of finger puppets was actually super squishy JP! If u r interested I will send you (and only you) a video to give you a better understanding.

Please do, Patrick. Thank you! I’m well versed on what is involved with the timing to make the consistency desired, but now knowing that they were first squishy, I am confused on why they would be ordered to be so stiff. I don’t dare squeeze mine with fear they’ll crack or at the least crease.

@boon velvet I do not own any of the finger puppets, unfortunately, and the only ones I’ve handled have been the squishy kind. Patrick’s got quite the assortment, so he’ll definitrly be the mad scientist with what you need. I will say, though, that the squishy ones I handled were pretty awesome, and were quite flexible. Some of the Chinese soft vinyl I do have(Headlock Studio, BxH, Medicom) do have a rather rigid stiffness to it. Almost like there’s no give at all, but once warmed up, they’re almost as pliable as sofubi.

Haha, Patrick just educated me. Thanks, Robert. They’re from different lines. The harder plastic is from the second series. 1st series was the squishy group.

I dont want to be reminded of old ladies with saggy tits when I look for toys.

I like that it looks like that she is just waving at someone, imagine looking at this walking on the street then she just waves at someone she knows like "OH HELLO DEAR"

With the amount of time it takes to sculpt a toy, you have a very long time to really think things through.
"Should I really finish this and produce this idea?" That's the thing that really gets me..
Whenever I see a really bad commercial on tv, I always think, "how did this make it past so many meetings to get made?!"

"Polishing a turd" is a term for a reason... It's real easy to get hung up on an idea and to keep chasing it thinking it will be something good eventually, once you have all that time invested it's almost like you feel obligated to finish it out.

I'm constantly mulling this over in my dome on a daily basis and yet I still come home after work and look at some of my stuff and weep bitter tears. Graduating with a bachelors in Illustration should mean something, but apparently not.

#470 would be "Just don't go to art school". Everything I'm actually doing now I've taught myself outside of a classroom, so there's that.

I'm not going to post a photo to spare everyone's eyes (mostly mine), but that Cherv toy on Kickstarter right now is absolutely nauseating.

Edit: fuck it, here you go :(

even though i don’t want a cherv i do appreciate that its a pretty decent rendering of the illustrators style! we really do need to chill with all the super gross toys imo

I don’t know who makes that toy, or what their art looks like, but it reminds me of an okay - ish rendition of a Junji Ito monstrosity. So in that respect, I can appreciate it. But I wouldn’t own one. I’m all for gross, rotting, detailed, shitting, gore, rancid genitalia, what have you. But I do feel like there’s a right way to do it when it comes to sofubi/soft vinyl, and this crosses the line into MacFarlane territory for me.

I think it fits his style too. I actually kind of like it. I know there is an overabundance of toys made of nothing but gore and shock value but to me this doesn't fit that at all. This is gross in the old school kids way. No balls or dicks or breasts. Just good old fashioned maggots and slime. I think it may suffer because of the current trend of shock toys made by people who started collecting toys 5 minutes ago and that is a shame. Acidma has been doing art in this style for many years and doing art for other vinyl makers toys for a long time as well. He doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the johnny come lately crowd at all.
