Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

    what did he explain???

...that its a fact that africans are being compared to primates ever since.

they are not - only racists do so!

...and that obama looks like an ape???

questions? ...why are morons bringing on racist comments not being banned from skullbrain???

roger, i really dont get why u are defending this.
do u realize that redhanded is making fun of
bringing on derogatory comments since side 2 and getting away with it?

    please delete this thread!!!
its a shame for the board if this is being tolerated.

Don't delete a 20 page thread just because of one comment. Keeping the thread does not mean anyone condones racist comments.

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

I agree that the thread should remain... and after some thought about what redhanded said, I don't believe he made his comments with racist intent.

The only thing he meant was that Obama resembled a cartoon character mostly because of the similarity in the shape of their ears. Unfortunately, the cartoon character was a monkey. Add in the history of Africans being compared to primates, and it all just added up to one big foot in the mouth disaster.

I firmly believe that the guy in the video with the curious George figure had racist intentions marching it around though.

What some of you aren't aware of is that there has been some discussion via PMs to clarify the issue, and that just hasn't come up in the thread.

Redhanded has indeed apologized, and while I think his posts on this subject could've been phrased a bit better, I don't believe he ever meant anything malicious by his comment. I think we all should give him the benefit of the doubt and just let this go.

I don't want to delete this thread. Please don't post offensive stuff. IF you think it might be offensive read it out loud.

If someone says something out of hand feel free to take them to task but do it respectfully.

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

Really? That wasn't offensive towards a group of people - it was just offensive to one person (Sarah Palin). It should be fine to make offensive statements targeted at a specific person. I could see if it was a blanket-statement regarding race/gender/sexuality/ethnicity/etc - but it was Sarah Palin and she DOES say retarded shit. Was it "retarded" that did it?
I hope we don't have to clean up our language with word-filters, a la KR. It's funny what with [expletive deleted], but "snickers bar"? I never thought I'd see the day.

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

Retarded people? Or people who agree with Sarah Palin?
(Honest question AND a joke! I'm not sure if you meant it was offensive to retarded people or if you were also making a joke. I don't see it as such - the butt of the joke was Sarah's words, not her child.)

Only if your allergic to peanuts there Smokey!

NT - it was offensive to people that are mentally challenged (okay in non PC terms Retards). I am no fan of the Northern Bush "light" but that was pretty offensive. If I had a relative that was in that way I would be terribly offended. Just as everybody made a deal about the Curious George thing - which I think is extremely racist STILL!!! This was not only an attack on Palin but here mentally challenged son. Palin can help the fact she is an tool but here son can't nor can any person who is born in that way!

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

Humor shouldnt be taken offensively, especially when its not personal. I am surprised this thread has snaked into being about offensive banter considering how many outright attacks on a personal level there are on this board over toys, taste, mark ups, and misunderstandings. I'd think humor was a free bird.

If my sharing of an img link was insultive to anyone I apologize to those mentally challanged SB board members that read it.

I know this is a little bit of an older post but I just watched this video. The main woman who keeps jumping in front of the camera talking about Obama and Palin.....wow. Honestly, when I see things like that it scares me. I worry about having kids, I worry about my future, I worry about the future of our country. It's more apparent to me than ever that racism is still a huge problem in our country. I saw this today and I honestly feel like crying....

How ignorant can people be? Honestly this is depressing to me.

ps, the woman who created that image sent it out to her GOP newsletter. She claimed that it wasn't racists in any way. She said that she didn't make any connections of it being racist! Seriously?

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

Oh I agree but I dont see how anyone took something so personal. I third party joke about palin went way off track. And when a joke is obviously a joke it shouldnt be offensive even if found distasteful or bad.

I think some people really search hard for ways to be angry.

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

I don't beat around the bush and mince words - you posted a misogynistic joke about mentally challenged people I found offensive. You in turn - apologized for posting it and in the same sentence insulted anybody's intelligence who found it offensive. I was one of those people - I was insulted and I returned in kind.

I think that pretty much covers it. Not really angry - I just like a good dust up. Keeps Roger on his toes!

    Carry on........

Re: McCain picks Palin (and other election discussion)

Dude, you took it all wrong.

The joke that wasnt mine was about Palin, it used her mentally handicapped child as a proponent for the joke. Yes it was a horrible joke but it was a joke none the less, and obvious. I like it most for Biden's expression not for the remarks themselves.

My joke wasnt meant to insult your intelligence at all. I am sorry you read it that way. Jokingly I was referring that no one here is likely to be mentally handicapped and therefor shouldnt have taken the first joke offensively.

And i will except the idea that maybe I should write things very carefully so people dont have any chance of misreading what I am trying to say. I do often think of myself as a sloppy writer.
