She's an amazing actress though... I mean, c'mon... her dialog in 5th Element? "Bib bip boop woo woo ungawa. Vootie vootie! Har poit narf!" I defy Meryl Streep to do it with the same conviction... in that little band-aid strappy costume...
what's the name of the french artist / writer / film maker on which 5th element was based on? The story that was most like the film was The Incal, which is avalible in two volumes, and I highly recomend pick them up or at least skimming through them. Though Moebius worked on the film, latter this story arose.. "Moebius and Jodorowsky (writer and would latter create a side seriers Metabaron) sued Luc Besson, director of The Fifth Element, claiming that the film borrowed graphic and story elements from The Incal, but lost their case. In a 2002 interview with the Danish comic book magazine Strip!, Jodorowsky actually claimed that he considered it an honour that somebody stole his ideas which is not surprising as Jodorowsky believes that authors do not create the stories they tell as much as they make personal interpretations of myths universal to the collective human subconsciousness."

two of my fave fun/gory/stupid sci-fi films i think i had a crush on Mr. Rowdy Roddy Piper for like a year after i first saw "They Live" but maximum overdrive is seriously kind of scary!
Yeah, we forgot about Cronenberg. But then there's that sci-fi/horror mingling again... I guess overall you could say Videodrome was sci-fi...
Aside from all that has been mentioned, I've always been fond of RoboCop (pretty twisted humor). And for the kiddies out ther, who can forget Tron?
I liked MR but speilberg fucks up another one of his films with a crappy ending (see also War Of The Worlds & A.I (which apart from the ending i thought was pretty awesome, i mean you can tell when Kubrick story ends and then you get bergs love letter to his mother for and extra 10 minutes, i think it would have been one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made if Kubrick had lived........... It's too hard to pick 5 films though and my mind changes daily! I never realy considered Cronenbergs body horror films sci-fi personally, but that is just me.... Dark Star anyone?????? OH and Roger Corman Alien rip off Forbidden World (aka Mutant) which is a whole heap of bloddy sci-fi fun, ditto Battle Beyond The Stars and warlords of atalntis (the best mad max on a budget rip off ever!)....Close Encounters??? omega mans remake is supposed to danny boyles 28 days later. trying to capture fascination of empty streets of london with digital recording didnt work for me. westworld and terminator was classic then what about predator??? me loved it too. even predator 2 was beyond back then when it comes to fast cut scenes. anyone know walter hills "southern comfort"? not really sf but so weird. met cronenberg @ a fantasy filmfest 2 years ago - just wondered he has pretty similar charisma as kozik. no?
I just bought the extended version of this today. It certainly adds a lot to the story and clears a lot of things up about the movie.
