I've been continuously collecting Japanese toys since 1998. Of course, I was buying stuff here and there at least ten years before that, but never really considered it a hobby back then. I've gone on "fasts" occasionally, but I've continuously participated on message boards and attended collector gatherings over the past decade. However, if I think about the future, I don't know whether or not I'll be at this level of involvement in the hobby in 2018. It's murky. How about you? Yes, no, or maybe?
ive been collecting pushead stuff for a good 7 years now anyway and its only recently i discovered super 7 and i am hooked more than ever plus i just got my membership for the SSSS and thats the kind of thing which keeps you excited about things
I'm kind of hoping this hobby will be like pogs, and everyone will be done collecting and dump their figures in a year or 2 and I'll be able to pick up every SB and RXH figure ever made for like 5 bucks each. Wishful thinking, I know.
I voted "yes". Been collecting various toys for five years. I also take breaks especially when I get disillusioned with the scene.
yes I should specify though this hobby, maybe collecting toys, most likely collecting in general, absolutely yes I collect so many things and I'm always getting interested in new things. there are so many fascinating things out there, so many things that I find inspiring and culturally important that I think should be preserved. I should have probably gone into museum/library studies or something. I'm not one of those people who limits himself to one or two things. sometimes it's hard because I get spread so thing with all of it, but I do my best to keep as focused on multiple things as I can. I usually say I collect collections. deep down I honestly hope that for anything you can think of that there is someone out there who collects it and keeps examples in good condition. I'm really just fascinated by die hard collector culture. I honestly think with some people that collecting is in their blood. for some it's just a hobby, for others it's more. for me, it's something I've always done, and something I always see myself doing, because I enjoy it, but also just because it's my nature. I remember being about 4-5 years old and I got a big manila envelope and started collecting all the comics from Bazooka bubble gum wrappers. once a had a bunch, it only made me want more, and so I started buying cases of Bazooka. at one point I must have had well over 1000 comics. I don't know what ever happened to them all. I'm sure my mom threw them out or something. God knows how many things there are since then, and I rarely give up one thing go to start another. I just try to horde it all. I'm such a packrat.
I figure since I've been loving this stuff ever since I first saw a Japanese monster at about the age of four or so, I should still be lovin' it at the age of 94, Godzilla willing I should make it. A more Japanese diet couldn't hurt. (*reconstitutes wakame*)
I've been collecting toys nonstop since 1995. I don't see that changing anytime soon. Having a new baby has taken a sizeable bite out of my toy budget. Daycare bill wins over toys but when I see something I need I'll find a way to get it.
I think I'll always be collecting something. My collection is pretty small which I like but I just think that there is always something about toys that appeal to me.
LOL ... I tried looking up "fattening Japanese foods" and all I came up with were pages saying how "the Japanese diet" is one of the healthiest in the world, good for longevity, and that "Japanese women don't get fat." Thank you for that lovely picture though. Having and nourishing active interests are also good for longevity. It takes GUTS to be an aging toy collector!
I'm right there with ya (though, like Xoco, I'm a tad older). It really is great to be a member of a community where I'm not the oldest by 10+ years (like most of the rock shows I go to) Nothing against you youngsters, though As far as the poll, I had to go with "maybe," seeing as Roger was pretty specific. I'd like to think I'd be, but 10 yrs is a long time, and tastes (as well as financial situations) are wont to change. Like Skylar, though, I'm sure I'll be collecting something; I've modified my packrat tendencies somewhat, but I'm still a voracious consumer (that is to say, I'm American) and I can't see that changing, whether it's books, movie posters, magazines, or toys.
I said no. I'm sure I'll still be collecting in general since I always have, but I've already cut my toy buying in half over the last year and I'm going to try to cut down further. As much as I want everything it just doesn't make sense to be spending all of my money on toys right now.
i replied maybe. i've been collecting japanese toys since 1990, but nothing near this level until 3 years ago. i hope to god i'm not this obsessed and insane with this stuff 10 years from now.
