i voted yes but then realized ten more years of collecting anything is going to result in having to have half my shit in storage as once i obbtain something i rarely let things go this has held true from toy from my childhood but mainly records( which is some thing i definatly know i will be collecting in 10 years so ten years from todays date is the skullbrain class of 08 reunion dont worry the building will be wheel chair accessable for old you old toy geezers
I voted no. I'll be collecting something, for sure, but probably not these toys. It's sad but true. I just can't keep up.
I actually haven't bought a toy in 3 and a half weeks. It's not that long but in that time I've really come to appreciate the toys I have. I LOVE my collection. There are a few toys I've passed on, RXH pieces, that I would have liked to have gotten, but phoning the shop everyday, scouring net forums, buying toys blind and planning weekends around buying toys... It takes up a lot of time and spring's here. I hope I'm still buying toys in 10 years, but I hope it's only 1 every 3 months or so. Next mission- cut down on the time spent scouring internet forums.
!0 years from now I think we will have sold Super7 to Walmart and I will be collecting those tiny umbrellas that come with fruity cocktails. I have been collecting records for over 20 years (yikes!!!!!) and I still spend more than I should on that collection every month. God help me and I will only be collecting records and toys in 10 years.
Voted yeah. Kaiju have been a part of my life as long as I can remember. My three favorite movies as a kid were Return of the Jedi, Jaws 3 and Godzilla vs. Megalon and I think my bootleg Gigan vinyl is still kicking around my 'rents house somewhere along with my black vinyl jumbo Godzilla. I spent my first paycheck ever on kaiju vinyl, and kaiju were one of the main reasons I got interested in Japan and eventually moved here. I guess you could say that by a really long string of causality if it weren't for kaiju I would have never even met my wife... But, like a lot of guys on here, I do tend to collect in phases. For a couple years I was really, really into records whereas now I only buy a few every now and then. Same with old horror manga, I still have books I haven't read yet because I would pick up 5 or 6 at a time (keep in mind that most vintage manga runs between $5~10, with some cool stuff going for $3). So, while I'm definitely on a vinyl kick now, in a year or so I might drop the spending down a little to focus on something else. I'll probably even sell a few of the figures that I end up being not so enamored with, but if my closet here and my parents' basement in the US attests to anything, 95% will still be around 10 years down the line.
Maybe? Voted Maybe I was born with collecting in my blood. As a kid growing up in the Midwest I didn't have a whole lot of exposure to Kaiju and what have you. So we collected Masters of the Universe, I swear I was 4 and had no idea what was going on but my parents were on a mad frenzy for those things. Through Middle school and High School I collected Comic Books and a few toys. Then after High School I stopped pretending to be "Cool" and started collecting toys and video games. Now that I've realized there is no point in collecting video games because you'll never play them all I'm mostly focused on toys. but it could change, so again, Maybe.
I voted "maybe". I've been collecting toys since I was 15yrs old--it wasn't first and foremost in my mind, but when I found something I liked, I would collect it without really thinking of it--just pick up a piece here and there, and then I would end up with a nice collection. wasn't a "thing" for me. when I was 18, I remember setting out to actually collect a particular line of toys I liked. that's when it really started is it is now. I think I'll always like toys. I collect jp vinyl, pvc statues, diecast stuff, action figures, transformers, etc. I think as long as ppl make stuff I like, I'll always pick something up, so long as I can swing it and I have room. I think I've done alright this year with vinyl stuff, but I hope to make it more of a casual hobby than an obsession. Japanese vinyl is a killer on the wallet, so I hope 10yrs from now I'm collecting vinyl like I collect pvc statues. every now and then. no biggie.
I turned 28 last week, I put maybe because I don't know what the future holds but I've been a collector since I can remember so I wouldn't be surprised if my collecting does not continue in some facet or another!!
while i don't think I'll be collecting, I will probably have the collection I already possess. Hopefully I'll have the scratch to move onto original canvases, etc.
I said "yes". but I collect slower than some. I hoard a lot of stuff and everything needs its own space. so, while I'd love to have a collection that was as comprehensive as others here, it's unreasonable for me. I really envy some folks here who can trace the history of the neo-kaiju scene simply by displaying their collections.
It's 5am here so bear with me... I voted "no" because by then I would most probably be flat broke. I am not even looking at 10 years, most probably 2-3 years that I will live a simplistic life with nothing in my home. All the money go to toys and records for most of my life. I have collected records since 1985 and I also had a record shop in 1999 for 4 years. My Mum use to work in a toy distribution company for all of Asia in the late 70's, so I use to get the vintage Star Wars Figures before they were even released...so collecting is in my blood at the age of 7. I stopped buying records in the past year because I lost my interest in djing...mostly because the crowds here are not what it use to be... it's all RnB crap... For toys, I have been thinking a lot since I haven't had much design work in a long time...mostly because I don't promote myself and it's finally starting to hurt me. Hence redesigning my site and have recently just started to promote myself which I hate. So I have thought of selling everything, records and toys... because with the recent move, I just realized how obsessed I can get. I probably have to digitize my vinyl collection first..prob take me the next 10 years I have 3/4 of my toy collection stored away now and the apartment is still looking cramped. It's this chase of toys that is appealing, the stuff in the toy cabinets make me smile, but most of the time it makes me unhappy knowing all the time and money I have put in I can probably do something more worthwhile. Maybe putting that energy into creating toys, painting art and customizing will help me alleviate the collecting urges. I have about 40 RxH stored away, Gargamel figs more than 50 percent and most of my Kaws is now in storage. It all doesn't make any sense that I am still buying toys now. I have bought about 4 toys in the last 2 months so it's getting better... with the mini rxh being so hard to get it's a blessing in disguise since I am starting to not care about being a completist anymore. My parents think I need to see a shrink as a joke, but I am starting to believe it's more real lately.
I hear ya! Practically all of my stuff is in boxes still - we bought a house in December. But I think I've bought more toys this year than all of last year. However, once we build a wall unit in our living room I'll have a place to display a lot of my stuff...right now I just don't have any place to put anything. But it feels weird to buy something when I'm just gonna put it upstairs not to be seen for who knows how long.
Yep, that's whi I had to put the brakes on as well. Limited space = limited collection; I'm not about to spend good $$ on stuff that'll sit in a box (not that I really have any room for boxes either ). I love the things I have, and I'll certainly keep getting stuff I like, just not at the breakneck pace I was a few years ago.
I voted no, but I think that's just wishful thinking. Every time I say I'm going to take a break I don't because I keep finding something I've been after. I'm sure I'll slow down eventually. I collected the other vinyl for years and that really slowed down as I lost interest in dj'ing....but I never got rid of my collection. I guess i'm just a collector at heart, Hopefully all of us will have mini museums (or big ones) in our old age. Like the Citizen Kane movie.....
Voted yes. Can't see myself giving it up. Wanna step it up. Maybe I can become successful enough to reach Pogue Level.
I hope to have a room dedicated to art in general, with a bunch of toys in glass cases and art prints all over the place when I'm older. hopefully I get my act together so I can make some serious dough to buy all this stuff. I hate buying all this great stuff, and then having to sell later b/c I need to pay my credit card of something.
