Maybe as he got older and smarter he was able to adjust it to do more things? (my wife says "that's fucking nerd logic shut up!")

Yep, was thrilled to get this confirmation this week. After all the rumors over the summer about what was found, and how many episodes it was, it is good to know that something was actually there. Still would love them to have dug up some of the classic Dalek storylines, but space yetis are a good satsifying interim.

Of relevance here, this is article explains some of the story behind the lost episodes, and why so many hunters are scouring unpexpected localses like Nigeria in hopes of turning up some physical copies of this missing history.

    Story of the lost episodes

Holy crap, today's doodle is amazing. Collect 'em all, avoid the baddies, and regenerate as several iterations of the Doctor.

If it weren't in 3D I'd have bought the tickets ages ago. Still thinking about it though.

I think it has been long enough, but suffice it to say spoilers ahead.

So did no one have any specific thoughts to share about the 50th anniversary special? I thought it was pretty good, but more like a great episode, rather than an all-encompassing celebration of the Doctor's past like I was hoping for. One of the things that kinda bothered me though was that this went the whole route (a personal peeve of mine) of an episode of a TV show that is incredibly intense and/or influential, but in the end is either forgotten or resets upon itself from the point of view of the characters. Star Trek is the biggest offender of this, but I hate seeing this kind of amazing writing then be copped out in the same episode to add nothing, simply to maintain the ease of continuity.

As far as the destruction/saving of Galifrey, it has become such an integral part of the Doctor's persona, particularly in the nu-Who era, that omitting it kind of make the character lose a bit of the darkness and inner turmoil that I found made him appealing. Behind it all there was always the willingness go to extremes and take incredible steps, even at great cost. I am also a bit curious, because it seems even in past episodes (specifically thinking of The End of Time storyline here, but I think it may have come up in other ones) that it was already mentioned that the Time War/Galifrey was frozen in time, although being de facto destroyed. So I guess this fits in with that, but then, what was accomplished? Anyways, probably overthinking it all, which is always a problem with any time traveling fiction.

The inclusion of Tom Baker was a nice touch, if a bit confusing though. I think it might have just been a red herring to move the plot forward for the next season. Still not quite sure about how Peter Capaldi is going to fit in to it. Could anyone tell about what the John Hurt Doctor regenerated to? It kinda seemed like it might be Capaldi to me, though having it be Hartnell would make more sense. I also don't get/didn't really like how he simply 'died' when entering the Tardis, but anyways, nitpicking of course. Probably my biggest issue was with the whole storyline with Elizabeth I and the Zygons. It felt tacked on and really added nothing. The threat was built up but never realised, didn't feel serious, and just vanished at the end. The focus on the Hurt Doctor's decision was really what made it for me. I was expecting/hoping for an exit of Clara, to bring in a new companion for the next Doctor. We'll see what happens there.

All in all, I enjoyed it, but found it a bit all over the place. Looking forward to the Christmas special.

I thought John Hurt regenerated to Christopher Eccleston, but I could be wrong.

Overall, I enjoyed this better than some of the other specials. It was nice to see the Zygons, but they did seem sort-of tacked on. I wish some of the earlier Doctors could have been in it more besides their cameos - especially Paul Mcgann, who only had the one TV movie.
( But he did get the "Night of the Doctor" 5 minute episode. )

^^^ Yes, Hurt was the 'Time Wars' Doctor, so after Withnail and before Elephant Ears.

Just had a look at this year's Christmas special. I could see where it might annoy the cynics among us, but I just loved it. Seems I'm getting sappier every day.

    Bye bye, Matt!

Don't give me your logic, with all it's valid points wrapped up in a complete and concentric tight bow, I just won't have any of it.

I liked it for the most part. Not as intense as Tens split but that was also Davies splitting too so it was bigger. My only problem was I kind of wish somehow Pond was more involved. But I enjoyed it. I also was expecting the Silence to play a bigger role. And the Angels.

Okay, I was with you (them) until Nicolas Cage. Godammit, we really need that barf emoticon. Some of those early ones were really spot on - Gene Wilder as the Doctor? that seems like a match made in heaven. But boy does it really fall apart later on. It is almost like two different people did the selections for the pre-90s Doctors, and well, the 'others.' Yikes. :|

At least put a Nic Cage warning/spoiler tag the next time David. The less I can see of him, the better. Blech.
