Patton Oswalt November 17, 2016 ยท This is...so perfect. I can't believe I missed it when it came out. This is one of those rare -- you'd be surprised how rare they actually are -- PERFECTLY WRITTEN, REALIZED AND EXECUTED COMEDY ROUTINES. Gary Gulman does a stand-up spot on Conan and the ENTIRE spot is on one single idea. Do you know how terrifying that is to risk? As a comedian? If you start down this road and it's NOT clicking? There's no ripcord. No bolt-hole to safety. You've chosen this track and you better hope it brings you to the next station instead of suddenly ending in warped rails over a crevasse. I've only seen a few people pull something like this off. Jake Johannsen did a spot on Letterman back in the 90s where all he talked about was the Midwest kid who got his arms torn off by a thresher and called 9-11 with his nose and teeth. That was the whole routine. And it destroyed. And then there are those PERFECTLY WRITTEN BITS that most comedy fans know. Louis CK trying to answer his daughter's repeated, "Why?" Maria Bamford getting the office orientation as a temp. Tig Notaro's cringe-y but sublime story about her disastrous show in Vegas and the ice cream cone. Don't worry, I'm still depressed and terrified and unsure about my life and the future of this country. But, before the engines stop running and the streets catch fire, I'm going to try to pluck some simple moments of beauty and silliness out of pop culture to ease my building horror. Brian K. Vaughn's PAPER GIRLS comic. Also LUMBERJANES and LAZARUS and anything Gail Simone's writing or will be writing. The DANA GOULD HOUR, YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS and SPONTANEANATION podcasts. TV shows like THOSE WHO CAN'T and CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND and DRUNK HISTORY and SOUTH PARK and STAN AGAINST EVIL and also how the CW is threading a smart, exciting summer blockbuster superhero movie through their weekly episodes of SUPERGIRL, ARROW, THE FLASH and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW. The fact that THE EXPANSE is coming back next year. The stadium dogs they sell at the Handi-Mart in Burbank. The tacos at Mixto. In and Out Burgers everywhere and Lucifer's Pizza on Hillhurst. New music, new books. Too many to name. But they're still being recorded, still being published. We're not dead yet. And great stand-up comedy Goofy, fun, and perfectly written. Thank you Gary Gulman. I know a lot of my shit's gonna get angry these next four years, but it's stuff like what Gary's doing that reminds me I gotta make sure it's funny first. Angry doesn't change shit. Funny disarms the horde.
Is there a thread for sharing short films here? I half remember one popping up a couple of years ago.
I couldn't find anywhere semi-relevant to share this, so I'm dropping it here. I found it while browsing for "Foam Monster Suit"... I should've known there'd be a few horrors lurking. You're Welcome. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shrek-monst...485453?hash=item1eb89f96cd:g:ILYAAOSwCGVX4pR9
I completely forgot about this movie until i remembered something about a kung fu cow fight! Also if you thought you were scared of playing scary games this guy takes it to a whole new lvl.
Strictly speaking, I really ought to be posting this in the educational thread. Warning: this goes on for ten minutes. Yes you read that right. Best comment - I once made a copy. Now I inject five marijuanas a day.
