was there 5-6 of em at the K-NY show? There was like 5 or 6 deathras painted exactly the same at GRNY
Are you serious? I didn't know that. I was refering to the the bigaro, bako and a few others. But I didn't know that they were runs. I thought it was 1 figure of each.
my understanding was one of each for the TT show and a separate run of ten deathras (GID I think) for his exhibit.
why does he sell blanks if were not supposed to paint em? im pretty sure iv seen many people sell customs, why single out buff?
the ones for the show were one-offs I thought... I don't know the skinny on the GR deathras...but as far as I know the pieces for KINYC were one of a kind pieces... there was no indication otherwise when the stuff arrived for the show...
i dont see the problem, the blanks are for sale, he pays the cost, he should be able to do whatever he wants with em. he says they are customs, he doesnt say "these are an official RXH release" or anything like that. i dont know.....just my opinion.
Blanks are for hobbyists and to keep people for destroying rare figures. I know there is nothing I can do about this but in Japan this is considered very bad form. I shouldn't have singled out Mori - most of the Japanese artists who saw the custom show had similar comments. They love people doing customs - they just don't enjoy people they don't know selling them for large sums of cash. I am just passing on the sentiment of the community over here. I always welcome healthy debate on the issue.
I think once you paint more than 1, the same color, it's technically a run. I like the solid line and enjoy seeing the customs that people paint but I don't agree with making an unofficial run of a certain figure that's not yours and charging 3 times the amount for it. Personally that doesn't sit well. (and I'm not saying that "buff" did this.) I mean..imagine Kaiju Kaiju Kaiju, if people purchased your resin sculpts with the intention that people could paint them. Then someone bought 10 of them, made an "unofficial" run and started painting them and selling them for double or triple. You might be okay with that but I don't know if other people would be. I don't think that the solid line was designed for people to buy and flip the product.
Many of us over "here" share the same sentiment. Painting by numbers to make a payday off of the true artists work is lame. Knowing the feelings of the creators makes it down right disrespectful. As far as Buffmonster, same old soup just re-heated. Oooo it's pink.
i wouldnt mind @ all im all for artists making some cash. i just cant understand counting other peoples money, if thats how much a person wants for a piece, taking into account the cost of the blank , supplies, time, and gallery commission, if the price is too high nobody will buy it. its ok for his friends to make a ton of cash off customs, but if he dont know you you gotta keep em on the shelf? just seem kinda crazy to me. i sell my product for how much i want , if you buy it from me and sell it on ebay for 100X what you paid more power to you, im no gonna speak badly of you cause i dont know you.
Who is the artist you are referring to here? I assume you mean Mori Katsura who has slogged and sweated for 6 years to create enduring characters with a powerful cult following. I am all for Mori making cash. If so we are in whole-hearted agreement.
Please define "artists".... Myself and others on this board, are definitely interested in supporting several artists. My opinion: With rare exception not withstanding....customizing the toys, cars, clothes, furniture or house you own, doesn't make you an artist....no matter how cool the project turns out. If a bitchin custom is created here, its appreciated and shown off in the appropriate forum. If that custom receives its accolades, and then shows up in the BST forum for big dollars, that definitely feels weird. Commissioned projects are an entirely different story. To me this an hommage request, an entirely different gesture. Something to be created and appreciated in someone's collection privately. My understanding of the SOLID line of figures was that it exists to offer hobbyists a blank figure, so that a handpainted original doesn't have to be painted over.
so mori doesnt get money from the blanks? im saying just as mori is entitled to the cash hes charging for the figure, whoever buys it and paints it should be able to charge however much they think there work is worth. i wasnt referring to mori in the above quote, i was answering the question the.redchicken asked about my opinion about people painting my resin figures and reselling them for profit, as long as they are buying the original figures and not bootlegging it or claiming they created the figure im fine with it. after i sell a figure its no longer my problem, you buy it its yours, keep it, flip it, paint it, burn it, throw it away, it doesnt matter its yours to do with what you please.
I don't see this on KT's website. It is a Buff Monster piece since it was shown on here. Buff had 5 deathras for his GRNY show and, if I remember correctly, no deathras for KINYC. A lot of misinformation floating around, and that is bothersome. Do your homework or shut up.
So you think its ok to take someone else's character design, like......a vinyl Mickey Mouse figure, customize it, and then sell it and pocket the profits entirely as your own work? Someone else's character or intellectual property?
Interesting discussion here. I really like the idea of the solid line especially the evils. Before that happen, I am guilty of "destroying" many originals. Japanese artists in general view customing some other artists sculpts quite differently from western artists. Even for private commissioning, unless you know the artists damn well, you are not likely going to get a custom Zyurai-asu from Mr Blobpus or a custom Bemon from RxH etc at whatever fees. Hence to see someone painting over their own creation especially in multiples with the sole intention of selling is indeed quite strange for most Japanese artists. I think this is even more so if its done by someone the artist don't know or associate with. On the other hand though, I do agree with kaiju3 that the pieces were never marketed as official run. It is up to the individual collector to decide how they would like to spend their own money and whether they would like to support such "multiple non-official customs" or not. Eventually, if most people decide that "multiple non-official customs" are not the thing for them, there will be no demand and hence no supply.
Wasn't this whole thing about customs and how people feel about them talked about already in another thread?
i didnt mean to start a big discussion, i just thought it was un-cool to call out one person for doing something that a lot of people on the boards seem to do with no repercussions (not that i think there should be any). maby if mori said id prefer nobody sell the solid customs it would have sounded better? i think a lot of people would assume its ok to sell the customs because every other diy product seems to be ok with it, so we all learn a little, if you dont know mori dont sell your RXH customs.
I hope Buff monster comes to Japan so I can introduce him to everybody! I hope he wants to come & meet everybody and talk about do some real collaborations!
