    Garo is back !!

Volume 18 of One-Punch Man has hit the shelves. Saitama is in the story pretty much full time again and his presence raises the wry humour back to earlier standards. There's a proper plot again, and time to build the monsters into characters, not just opponents.

I think they've won me back. Once they finally veared away from the monster/hero showdown formula it instantly got better again. Not that I'm expecting OPM to be some 'classic' but i prefer it when it does its own thing, and not follow the Shonen path quite so much.

Interesting that its an adaptation of a literary classic, and 616 pages long! It looks bleak as hell, please report back what you make of it when you find time to read it. Thats a big chunk of Manga!

You know, the original novel it’s based on is not horror at all. It’s standard issue in Japanese schools and is basically a semi autobiographical depressing account of a fucked up life. I’m intrigued by Ito including ghouls on the cover so I’m wondering if it’s a reimagining of the tale a la his version of Snow White.

Will do, although that may take some time as I haven't even made my way through Smashed, Frankenstein and a generally frightening pile of unread books yet. Seems like a a real passion project by Ito though, I was already blown away just after flipping through it...

I'm guessing they made him do ghouls for the cover, the horror here seems to be grounded very much in real life & it appears like a rather understated work compared to Ito's usual excesses (again, just my impression after flipping through it).

The English translation of the first 'Hi Score Girl' book has dropped. Its published by Square Enix Manga, and i have no complaints about the quality of the translation and book. If you've seen the Anime there wont be many surprises, because the Anime follows the Manga story quite closely. I really like the artwork, Rensuke Oshikiri has an unusual style that looks like most popular Manga but quite often mixes in a more Indie/Underground look to it. Its pretty cool, and for that alone is worth a read.

Just finished Showa 1926-1939: A History of Japan. Not amazing by any stretch, but a decent way to take down a cliff notes version of a chunk of history.

Yeah, I bought the first few of these but then spaced on them so I'm a few editions behind now. I haven't even got round to reading them yet - such is the fate of certain books, when you have an over-abundance of them. You just keep buying more and the newer books take precedence ....

For sure! My local bookstore had their big sale the other week and now the to-read stack by my bed is a good 28" tall! I had it whittled down to about 10-12". Just about done with a book and am looking forward to pulling something new off the stack. There are some books that have been in the stack for probably 3 years at this point, as other books keep sounding better.

This made me feel a lot less guilty about buying shit and not reading it. Trying to limit what I have right now as I've been moving about once a year. I've got two library systems around me that stay pretty stocked in the manga and comic department but it doesn't replace the feeling of having a collection.

I think this is all of Viz Media's releases to date for Junji Ito. They're all hardcopy and great releases. I can't recommend them enough.

Now I want Black Paradox and Hell Star Remina. BP is just entertaining with such awful people. Remina is just nuts.

Edit: I may be missing his Cat Stories. [shrug]

Recently received 'Hi-Score Girl' Vol. 2 and the latest two 'Ge-Ge-Ge no Kitaro' translations from Drawn & Quarterly :D
I'm very happy D+Q have managed to publish this many of Kitaro so far, they are excellent translations and very well put together paperbacks ...

I also think i'm going to stop collecting 'One Punch Man'. I haven't bought the last two. It just started to get very repetitive and wasn't as focused on the humour anymore ... i will probably sell them at some point, i enjoyed them but i cant see me reading them again.

A long time ago I had rips of Berserk on my computer but I have no idea where I left off and have gone through about 2 laptops since then. Luckily for me my local library system has tons of manga so I've been checking out volumes and re-reading it.

Nice, you can't go wrong with Tezuka, its been a while since I read MW but I remember enjoying it.

I keep meaning to order the Tsuge collection. I have his famous story Neji-shiki (Screw-style) in two compilations, he reminds me a lot of Yoshihiro Tatsumi, both of them have a dark edge and are very different to what most people would think of as Manga. Proper grown-up stuff, that challenges and surprises. I always recommend 'A Drifting Life' by Tatsumi to anyone who will listen, its his masterpiece and one of the best manga I've ever read.

I'm glad the underground Gekiga guys are continuing to get their due. They should of been translated into English a long time ago. Another good one is 'Red Snow' by Susumu Katsumata ...

Thanks for the reminder, I'm going to order that Tsuge book now!

    *edit*
Just ordered 'The Swamp' and I threw in 'The Pits of Hell' by Yoshikazu Ebisu, I've been meaning to grab that one for a while too.

I'd love to buy these sort of Manga from brick and mortar comic shops but they just don't stock stuff like this where I live, or if they do, they get like one copy and if you don't get there first you're shit out of luck.

Grabbed my copy of Swamp at one of my locals a few days ago - just great! - but I had to resort to the net for my copy of Pits. You had a leg up over me on the latter, Joe, as they published it up the street from you!

Which is your place, Rei? Velocity?
