Here's a review a left on Amazon back in 2010
I thought i'd go ahead and post a few more Amazon reviews on some of the Manga i mentioned on the previous page
Garo is back !!
Volume 18 of One-Punch Man has hit the shelves. Saitama is in the story pretty much full time again and his presence raises the wry humour back to earlier standards. There's a proper plot again, and time to build the monsters into characters, not just opponents.
I think they've won me back. Once they finally veared away from the monster/hero showdown formula it instantly got better again. Not that I'm expecting OPM to be some 'classic' but i prefer it when it does its own thing, and not follow the Shonen path quite so much.
Got this in yesterday - truly looks like Ito's masterpiece:
Interesting that its an adaptation of a literary classic, and 616 pages long! It looks bleak as hell, please report back what you make of it when you find time to read it. Thats a big chunk of Manga!
You know, the original novel it’s based on is not horror at all. It’s standard issue in Japanese schools and is basically a semi autobiographical depressing account of a fucked up life. I’m intrigued by Ito including ghouls on the cover so I’m wondering if it’s a reimagining of the tale a la his version of Snow White.
Will do, although that may take some time as I haven't even made my way through Smashed, Frankenstein and a generally frightening pile of unread books yet. Seems like a a real passion project by Ito though, I was already blown away just after flipping through it...
I'm guessing they made him do ghouls for the cover, the horror here seems to be grounded very much in real life & it appears like a rather understated work compared to Ito's usual excesses (again, just my impression after flipping through it).
