I think this is the right spot for this. If not, mega apologies. A few months back I started this matryoshka yokai project to be raffled for charity at the east coast collectiondx summit. I used a store bought doll as a base. All of the sculpting on the large outer shell is apoxie sculpt. I painted everything with craft paint and various citadel paints.
This is the head of an Abura Sumashi I'm doing for Sanjeev. It's been primed black to check for weirdness and has since been [imgwidth=][imgwidth=][/imgwidth][/imgwidth]very messily sanded. Not sure if I want to add a scar over the bum eye. Anyways it's apoxie sculpt over a wooden sphere and styrene for the connecting stem. Will have a shot of the body wip later tonight I hope. Thanks for peeping!
Haha yes! I approve of this comparison. Thankies! So I've been posting photos from my phone and just now realized they're mad huge on the board. Yeah I'm a little slow. Here are shots of the body wip and hopefully they'll show up smaller. Also the neck will be trimmed down when the body is 100%. Thanks for looking!
Looking good, Josh! Very faithful to the folklore...but the "deformed" style is very unique. I dig. Oh, I got a chance to handle that Matryoshka doll at the Summit a couple months ago. Everyone loved it! The raffled earned over $100 for the ASPCA!
You make me blush! I'm hoping to have this guy done soon so I can maybe do resin casts or even *GASP* see if its worthy of vinyl. Who knows! Also! Money raised was for the Humane Society. Not quite the same as the ASPCA but in the same ball park.
So like hahah it's been a minute since I've posted any actual progress in the realm of toy production. This is a finger puppet that's a part of a sauna/ bathtime monster project with Quail Toy and a handful of really skilled artists. I should have this guy in sweet delicious sofubi in a couple/ few months. This is a huge milestone for me, as it'll be the first figure I've ever had professionally produced. Playing around with Chavant Alien Clay. You can find a full review of that stuff in the sculpture knowledge thread. View this post on Instagram
Time to put my money where my mouth is. This is a basicy basic reveal of sculpts slated for sofubi. I've been poking away at these since late last year. Next up is cleaned up wax finals and it's off to the races. Questions criticism welcome. Thanks everyone who provided help in the Japan stamp thread. You really gave me the insight to just do the thing and not worry so much. View this post on Instagram
It's too bad the Instagram embed isn't working right. Totally worth clicking through. Those designs look great! The little detail of the wrinkled boots on Mr. Lungs *chef's kiss*
Works for me. I like them both, the middle one is a good melding of Kikaider and Giant Robo and the lung monster is very reminiscent of the weirder Kamen Rider bad guys.
Thank you! There's definitely a lot of kikaider in that guy. I'm leaning hard into the kaijin from the 2nd half of Barom 1. If this goes well, I have a few other guys in the works for this particular toy line. @doomboy thanks! The lung baddie is 100% done outside of wax so I'll be posting better pictures of him soon.
@blakewest Yeah! Karl Lung is kind of perfect actually. Haha The roboty guy is Micron Ace. He's an android who shrinks to microscopic size to fight byokijin, which are space virus born kaijin. Ol lung dude is one of those kaijin. I've had this concept in my head for nearly 15 years. It really makes my day to see it being received so positively.
Just one more: Lung Thug I like the idea of a shrinking robot hero! I can imagine the "signature move" of him shrinking down, like Keiji K ripping off his blazer to fight B.A.D. or Kamen Rider spinning up his power meter.
Something of a turn around of the lung kaijin. Doing some last minute pre-cleanup before the first round of molds. View this post on Instagram
First resin pull for this guy. I'm cooking wax for a definitive master now. View this post on Instagram
