I had been looking forward to seeing this because I heard it's a good horror film. But none of the theaters near me are playing it They play every crappy horror film released, and then when a good one is released, they don't bother to pick it up Lame.
Has it not made it to the cinema there yet? its out on DVD here, highly recommend this film. Also check out Dog Soldiers to see an earlier effort by the director.
Today is the release date. Yeah, Dog Soldiers is a pretty cool werewolf flick. It didn't blow me away, but it was worth seeing.
Was it a UK film that's just being redistributed over in the US? How could it be out of DVD? I'm confused. Or is it bootleg?
It was a UK film, it must have come out in the cinema's over here about a year and a half ago. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435625/ This situation is usually reversed in that we wait months to see films that have been out for ages in the US http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/903893/The_Descent_The_Special_Edition/Product.html
I've been looking forward to seeing this after hearing good things about the movie. I've heard that like 28 Days Later, there will be a different ending for the US version. Can anyone confirm this?
The UK DVD has been out since the end of last year. If you haven't seen it yet, believe the hype, it is a fantastic horror film. The end is different. I've only seen the UK release, but if what I was told about the new ending is correct, it really only cuts off a bit and still retains the feel of the original end. It sounds sort of pointless to me, but regardless, I wouldn't let it keep you away from the theater, it is a great film. And as far as Dog Soldiers goes, I really liked it but he grew as a director and The Descent is so much better, there is really no comparison.
actually, I feel like what they cut drastically changes the tone of the ending. you're right in saying that it's actually only a very small amount of footage, about a minute or two, but totally changes things. I have the UK DVD and they screened the US print at the philly film fest here and it definitely has a shorter ending here.
So I went to see The Descent earlier today, and it definitely lived up to the hype. This is the best horror movie to come out in a LONG time. Caves are a perfect setting for a monster movie...trapped in confined spaces in total darkness. This film was pretty gory and intense, and I really enjoyed it. My only complaint is the ending. I saw the original ending on youtube, and it's much better. I hope the original ending is on the US DVD.
That's too bad. I don't get why companies cut up films like this. You know some lame focus group probably thought the end should be more upbeat or something stupid like that.
I'm sure that's exactly the reason why. we're not ever really allowed to have anything dark and fucked up that might actually stay with you. everything always has to be conveniently wrapped up in a happy little triumphant package.
great flick... the acting is a little loose but the atmosphere is great. The return of Brittish horror. I love dog soldiers... eager to see what he (Neil Marshall I think) does next I'm getting really sick of these j-horror remakes with american teenage bimbos.
I don't think you'll have to worry about more j-horror remakes, I haven't seen a really great Asian horror film in a year and a half, and a halfway descent one in the last few months. They're ripping themselves off so bad at this point that I cringe when I get new horror stuff into the store, because I know that's another hour and a half of my life that I won't get back when I have to watch it.
I just saw The Descent, and... SPOILERS AHOY!!! I liked it. I can't say I loved it. It was definitely head and shoulders above 90% of current wide-release horror films, but I just wasn't scared. And when I say "scared," I mean both the jump-in-your-seat instant fright and the lingering variety. Maybe it was due to the nature of the monsters, I'm not sure, but the person I was with was utterly freaked out. She had to wait in the lobby for about 10 minutes until I convinced her to come back in. The best aspect of this was he echo of the same theme from movies like Pitch Black and the Romero Dead flicks: the creatures you are battling are just an environmental hazard, but the real monsters you will need to deal with are other people. I also liked the symbolism of Sarah's "baptism," and the final shot showing that Juno has replaced Sarah's daughter as the ghost that will haunt the rest of her days. After watching the UK ending on YouTube, I think the US version is better. You don't need to put an unhappy ending in there just for the sake of having an unhappy ending. As it is, the US version isn't very happy, and you could even view the UK version as providing a merciful end for Sarah. And did I see rhinos in those cave paintings? I'll be getting Dog Soldiers from Netflix this weekend, looking forward to it.
Hey Roger can you link me the original ending ?? I saw it this weekend and thought it was a great movie
Whoa that changes it a bit.... I think the UK is better. The movis had an overall clostrphobic feeling and the UK ending just keeps you there. the US is definitly a more merciful ending. I think I'm gonna try to buy one off ebay
Watching Dog Soldiers and ...... meh.... kinda sucks if you ask me. I actualy bought it ,shit was on sale at circuitcity for 6 bucks so no big loss...
I just watched Dog Soldiers yesterday. Great premise, great photography, but then it just got really ridiculous and convoluted. Either they shot with an incomplete script or had a half-dozen editors working on it. The Descent was better.
so i FINALLY just watched the video... the "full" title was: The Descent (Original Unrated Cut) i have no clue if i saw the UK ending or the US ending... the video honestly never clarifies, and in the extras, the director talks about the endings being different, but the video doesn't indicate which one we are seeing. (since it says "Original" (lol) i can't really assume crap. SO... i checked the link Ryan put up and of course, youtube removed it at the request of Lion's Gate sigh.... i'll look around for myself, but can anyone tell me the difference?? *SPOILER ALERT* if you haven't seen... in the ending i just watched, she escapes... drives away, and then sees the ghost of Juno (the alpha-chick who was humping her husband) in the passenger seat of the truck. THEN, it flashes back to the cave and she sees her daughter again, with the birthday cake. i understand the implication of the ending, but which ending is it???? edit: so i just read over the IMDB comments, seems like maybe this ending is an amalgam of both the US and UK endings? i'm sort of annoyed to even have to try and figure out what i'm seeing. if you love movies, you want to know whats up with each ending separately in this sort of deal.
