Wow, I can't believe the love this film gets from you US folks, I thought this was one of the most overhyped pieces of shit I've seen in a long time, crappy monsters, awful acting, shit shit CGI, weak story, crappy turn the music up jump scares/cuts.
I am a life long horror fan and I really can't believe I paid money to this.

Well, it's not the greatest horror movie ever, but compared to just about everything else that has been released over the course of the last 10 years, it's quite good. I even bought the DVD. The only other horror movies I own on DVD...Halloween, Scream, Night of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I plan on picking up The Fly and Alien/Aliens again (sold the quadrilogy).

The Unrated Edition DVD contains the original UK ending. greg is correct. The American theatrical release ended after the scene in the truck. I'm really glad the original ending made it to DVD because it provides much better resolution to the film in my opinion. The director thinks so, too.

never said i loved it, said i wanted to know what the endings were, lol.

i generally thought it was quite good. very realistic. i think the claustrophobia of the sets impressed me more than anything. scared me a lot more than the crawlers! (who were, nevertheless, quite good at being disgusting)

    **spoiler***

Jackie you saw the UK ending. The american ending ends in the car when she sees juno.

I guess thay did that so they can make another probably decent 2, who knows.

But the originla goes back to the cave where she never excapes.

I personally like the Uk as its grimmer.

    Hope this helps. :)

I agree - once the monsters appeared a lot of the tension disappeared as well. Although I have to say that the sound design was superb (especially the surround aspect).

Did anyone else feel that the music was unduly distracting, though? Despite being a musician, I can't help but feel that most films could do without non-diegetic music, which more often than not just seems to be there to indicate to viewers how they should feel.

Horror movies are particularly bad in regards to the overuse of sound and music cues to build tension. It's a crutch for when the story and maker's level of talent can't quite cut it. Best use of sound in a horror film? When the kid in Kubrik's Shining is riding his big wheel down the hotel halls. That was creepy and very effective.

    the music was horrible!
even during the most suspenseful early parts, i found myself thinking "what the fuck is that about?"

In this case, for me, i didn't think the problem was even necessarily about it being extra-diagetic (though i agree with your general assessment). it was just so poorly executed in this film that i actually felt distracted by it.
