I love Boris, and they are consistently amazing live. Before I got back into collecting toys, all my money went to records, and tracking down Boris's stuff took up the majority of it. Mono's really good, Japanese, but fairly well known in the US. They're on Temporary Residence's label in the US, so they sometimes tour with Explosions and Maserati. I'd also suggest checking out World's End Girlfriend. Hurtbreak Wonderland is good, but their collab with Mono blows everything they've ever done out of the water. It's called Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain. Ogre You Asshole is fairly entertaining Japanese indie pop, and other than having an entertaining name, are pretty catchy.
Thanks for the tips on WEG/Mono onwi ... I've been wanting to check them out! Re: BORIS/boris: The live 'bootleg' of "Feedbacker" is up on YouTube. "Pretty awesome", to quote the guy who posted it. In 4 parts, but on a Playlist, so (I think) you can just veg out & watch/listen to the whole thing. Starts here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9Ij4dAk ... 52&index=3 (Actually, I seem to have to click the links each time - but maybe just me?)
mono is gonna be in LA october 13th..funny tidbit..... the main guy from mono Taka . kinda stole my bandmates girlfriend....funny story...cant go into it more...but its all good now and everyone is friends... if anyone in LA is gonna go to the show..hit me up we can all chill with mono afterwards
Boris w/ Michio Kurihara - Rainbow. Amazing album. Probably their quietest album, but definitely one of their strongest. Acid Mothers Temple is hit or miss for me, but worth checking out. Ghost is another great band that's more on the quiet/experimental side of things.
Another band that really needs to be seen/heard live: Envy ~ "Scene" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp_4wVg-Ti4
Also, if your ears can stand it, HUGE article on Japanese noise-core : http://www.shit-fi.com/articles/Japanes ... oreRecords A bunch of photos & links to mp3s and yes, ENVY!! holy shit I'm gonna put on a dead sinking story right now.
Do NOT understand why this band broke up: Thee Michelle Gun Elephant ~ Out Blues: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l745SMQNMww GT400: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hlCsGJn_Vo Smokin' Billy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIzhxnF5 ... re=related GWD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4t7bNIpYECw Boogie*: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8f313b29Q0 *= my favorite
Of course Envy !!! I saw them in concert and was blown away ! I can't wait to see them again. And Boris too ! I confirm that collecting their items is a looong & tedious task... I love Rainbow, Smile & Pink. As for Mono I would recommend "One Step More and You Die". Any one else on screamo ? Heaven in her arms, Killie... And there is the visual rock movement. Most are just trying to have the darkest look but I love Onmyo-Za, Dir en Grey (Withered to death, The Marrow of a Bone are especially good) & Moi Dix Mois. I love post-rock too : toe, sequence pulse. Anyone has any other good references to recommend ?
Rainbow is a great album. The last time Boris played in Tokyo, and the last time they played in Austin, Michio was with them. The title track blows me away every time, and is a nice starting point for a lot of people that aren't into drone. Akuma No Uta will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first Boris album I listened to fully, and only because of the Nick Drake inspired cover. Envy's awesome, but every every EVERY time they play in Tokyo, I have to work. Or leave on a trip. Or am deathly ill. I don't think I'll ever see them live.
I was there! At Daikanyama Unit? (Masonna was the support ... It was a tuff decision, but I decided to arrive fashionably late. ) Did you notice these guys in the audience btw?: Yura Yura Teikoku (ゆらゆら帝国) ~ Yurayura - their name means 'Rocking (in the sense of 'unbalanced') Empire' - have been playing psychedelic pop-rock around Tokyo for over 10yrs now. These short tracks will give you a taste, but it's their extended jams that really make them interesting, both live and on disc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfjFcc2WfMg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPd3zidPEao http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_dk8ChdCA8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uakXjerOqE I don't even know the names of half of their songs, but a 'Best Of' called "1998-2004" is good place to start. It even has Woo on the cover! How can you go wrong?
i saw acid mothers temple at bottom of the hill, and fell asleep standing up in the very front row. woke up when the dude smashed his guitar into the stage like a couple feet from my face. also, boredoms fucking rule.
I am into metal and punk ( and a little old) and shout the praises of LOUDNESS, a Japanese Metal band from the 80's. Classic 80's metal. Also dig Guitar Wolf. Not to much into the pop, but like some of the hip hop. Also, Saw some Japanese Psychobilly bands at a club in Yokohama called FAD some years ago, only name I can remember is Jazzy Bounce.( I love the English names the bands come up with). Really like the punk and Psychobilly scene going on in Japan. (or is it over, been a few years)
*puts on old geezer voice* God bless you young'ns. Once upon a time all we westerners had to choose from were Sadistic Mika Band, Yellow Magic Orchestra, The Plastics, and (heh heh) Pink Lady.
Oh God! The Plastics ... Peace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmSPofE6zBE Robot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKRnOBb9Inw Copy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mFipU8PW4g
